Outside of Steven Soderbergh, we’d have to say that Guy Ritchie is one of the most prolific filmmakers of the past decade or so. Over the past couple of years, he’s had three major films released. Sure, not all of them did well at the box office, but the man is fast. Now, he’s already putting together a cast for a new film that will begin production in 2025.

According to Black Bear, Guy Ritchie has tapped Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike, and Anthony Hopkins to lead his new film, “Wife & Dog.” Written and directed by Ritchie, the film is said to showcase the colorful, back-stabbing world of the British aristocracy.

CinemaCon 2024 is in full swing in Las Vegas, and some exciting news came from Lionsgate’s film panel, including info on two upcoming Henry Cavill movies with the studio. The first tidbit is that Cavill’s previously untitled action film directed by Guy Ritchie (“The Gentlemen”) is going to be titled “In The Grey,” which also stars Jake Gyllenhaal (“The Covenant”) and Eiza González (“Ambulance”) in lead roles.

Actor Ray Winstone has two Netflix projects on the way: Guy Ritchie’s crime comedy series, “The Gentlemen” (read our review), and “Damsel” opposite Millie Bobbie Brown. But of course, as is custom these days, the actor was asked about his appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Winstone played the villain, Russian general Dreykov, in “Black Widow” opposite Scarlett Johansson.

Having just completed a TV spin-off of his own movie, Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” series based on the 2019 film of the same name (read our review here), filmmaker Guy Ritchie is going back to a similar well. This time, it’s TV to TV: Paramount+, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios & 101 Studios announced that Ritchie will direct and executive produce “The Donovans,” a new series that will be loosely based on Showtime’s popular “Ray Donovan” show starring Liev Schreiber, and Irish award-winning screenwriter, producer, and novelist Ronan Bennett will pen all ten episodes of this new series.

Witty, nimble, sharply dressed, and light on its feet, Guy Ritchie’s dexterous “The Gentlemen” is a largely surprising delight (mostly, anyhow)—an entertaining crime comedy with a snap, crackle, and pop that’s far superior to the more self-enamored 2019 film of the same name whence it came. The connections to the original are tenuous at best, nothing more than the cannabis and drug empires milieus in the U.K. and the unsavory cast of characters that inhabit it, really, but featuring similar effervescent spark and appeal, it isn’t as offputtingly smug as the original (a decent film often elevated by its cast, but derailed by its conceited, wink-wink-nudge-nudge humor and overly self-satisfied meta-filmmaking navel-gazing nonsense).

For a film directed, produced, and co-written by Ritchie, it feels more like the result of someone trying to emulate his work and falling short. However, there are moments when the premise’s promise shines through, making that inconsistency additionally frustrating.

It’s the first time Jones and Ritchie work together since 2000’s “Snatch.”

Maybe no one remembers anymore because it came out right before the COVID-19 pandemic took over the world, but “The Gentlemen” was a big hit for Guy Ritchie. It made $115 million at the box office, off a $22 million budget, did well with critics, and showcased a big jump in Ritchie’s screenwriting abilities.  Miramax loved it, too, so much so that they started developing a spinoff TV series in October 2022, which Netflix involved themselves in earlier this year.
