Imagine a film where Cate Blanchett plays a version of Angela Merkel. And Charles Dance is a Joe Biden parody in full British accent. Now add Denis Ménochet as a boisterous French president carried around a damp forest in a wheelbarrow and Alicia Vikander as a beautiful diplomat who tells tales of the end of the world in frenzied Swedish. A feel more pinches of insanity and you would have “Rumours,” the newest by Canadian maverick trio Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson, and Galen Johnson.

Bleecker Street Gives First Look At Guy Maddin’s ‘Rumours’ With Cate Blanchett & Alicia Vikander & More Upcoming Titles

“Rumours” is on the way. In celebration of its 10th anniversary, Bleecker Street, the indie film studio, has released a new highlight sizzle reel emphasizing their greatest hits film accomplishments and a tease of what’s to come with never-before-seen footage. Some of Bleecker Street’s most notable titles include Steven Soderbergh’s “Logan Lucky,” “Eye in the Sky,” “Kitty Green’s “The Assistant,” Debra Granik’s “Leave No Trace” and “Captain Fantastic” (which earned Viggo Mortensen a Best Actor Oscar nomination), and many more, but it’s the upcoming titles that are the most compelling.

‘Rumours’: Alicia Vikander Joins Cate Blanchett On Guy Maddin’s Next Film

In October, news broke that Cate Blanchett would team up with Canadian avant-garde auteur Guy Maddin for his next feature, “Rumours.” That was already a super-intriguing combo, but Bleeker Street has announced another premier actress has joined the film’s cast: Alicia Vikander. What was once intriguing now becomes what will likely be one of 2024’s must-see movies.

Guy Maddin Made A Cinematic Love Letter To San Francisco And Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘Vertigo’

The San Francisco International Film Festival had a pretty ambitious idea for its 60th anniversary: commission filmmaker Guy Maddin to construct a new cinematic love letter to San Francisco using movies and television shows set around the city. To hear Maddin tell it though, that idea quickly evolved into something more focused on a single film, Alfred Hitchock‘s seminal classic “Vertigo.” The resulting feature is titled “The Green Fog — A San Francisco Fantasia” and it closed the San Francisco Film Festival with live musical accompaniment from the Kronos Quartet.

Originally slated to start filming last year, Guy Maddin postponed his next feature film, “Keyhole,” in order to do the National Film Board short film, “Night Mayor.” With that project now all wrapped up and available online for viewing (you can check it out here), Maddin has turned his attention back to “Keyhole” and filming is already underway in Winnipeg.

This one kind of fell off our radar, but we’re glad another (probably) quirky and enigmatic feature from the Canadian iconoclast is on the way, and as usual, he’s lined up an interesting cast.

No surprise here. Mel Gibson has been dropped by his agency WME in the wake of newly leaked tapes where he runs his mouth (again) and drops the n-word.

Guy Maddin’s new short film “Night Mayor,” which won the Short Film Jury Award for Experimental Shorts at SXSW is now available online thanks to NFB. We previously reported Maddin had postponed his next feature, “Keyhole,” so he could work on this short for the National Film Board of Canada which he described at the time as “an imaginative cinematic riff on the significance of a public film producer.” And rest assured, the end result is just as fresh and insane as Maddin’s previous work (“My Winnipeg” and “Brand Upon the Brain”).

Remembering Mark Linkous Aka Sparklehorse

We mentioned early this week — ironically during the reporting of the “Remember Me” soundtrack — the tragic passing of Mark Linkous, aka the experimental folk, Virginia based braintrust of Sparklehorse, who sadly took his own life this past weekend.

The details are pretty heartbreaking and the singer, multi-instrumentalist of creaking, sad/beautiful songs, evidently shot himself in the heart after receiving a text message that brought him over the edge.

We here at the Playlist were huge fans but we’re not the only ones, as an outpouring of grief came from musicians who knew and loved the underappreciated band —described by the NYTimes, not completely off the mark as “psychedelic Appalachian folk slop.” Bands and artists like Radiohead, Death Cab For Cutie, Steve Albini, the Flaming Lips, Califone and more all gave eulogies and reactions to the news of the departed singer who struggled with depression all of his life.

The Playlist has admittedly drifted off in the wrong direction of late. Let’s try and reign it in and get back to the good stuff. Canadian filmmaker of the wintry and melodramatically delirious mien Guy Maddin (“Brand Upon The Brain,” “The Saddest Music On Earth”) has a new film on the way.

Much like his incredible, drunken-dreamy docu-fantasia, “My Winnipeg” (one of 2008’s best), this one is also commissioned by the National Film Board of Canada (NFB).

RIP: Anne Savage (1921-2008)

Anne Savage, the 1940s pulp fiction film femme fatale, died in her sleep at a nursing home on Christmas Day from complications following a series of strokes according to the AP.

Best known for her work in the 1945 B-movie “Detour,” Savage recently played Guy Maddin’s mother in the fantastical docu-drama, “My Winnipeg.” We won’t pretend that we’re in any way experts of her work, but her melodramatic turn in Madden’s deliriously dreamy pseudo-doc was great and the film was one of our favorites of 2008.

Guy Maddin’s Does The Best Oversharing Imaginable In His “Docu-Fantasia” ‘My Winnipeg’

Emo-folk like Dashboard Confesional, Alanis Morrissette, Emily Gould and a world of bloggers have served to teach us the cautionary – and embarrassing – tale of oversharing (really, have you no shame?).

But, if there ever was a right way to overshare, if one could use narcissism for the purposes of good instead of evil, wintry confessional Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin certainly would take that prize.

The self-aware Canadians latest delirious delight, “My Winnipeg,” is documentary docu-fantasia” ostensibly about the the director’s hometown – the city of Winnipeg in Manitoba, as commissioned by the documentary channel in the Great White North (“I’m from Canada, so I don’t ever have to pitch movies, the government just pays me to make them”).

The trailer for Guy Maddin’s fabulist documentary “My Winnipeg,” one our favorite films of 2008 thus far, is online. The film opens June 13 in presumably limited release (IFC is distributing) and we loved the shit out of its “wintry, snowglobe aesthetics,” its “eroticized adolescent Freudian examinations” and the kooky ” ’50s like paranoiac melodrama” within. Full synopsis below, but go out of your way to catch this one if you can. IFC does a pretty good job of putting all its film on OnDemand at the same time of release, so if you’re in a smaller city, this may be the way to go.

Guy Maddin’s ‘Brand Upon The Brain’ & ‘Salo’ Coming (Back) To Criterion

Criterion has unveiled its August release schedule on its website and two of the highlights for us are Guy Maddin’s family psychodrama “Brand Upon The Brain,” – which toured as a live event with celebrity narrators (Lou Reed, Crispin Glover), an 10-piece orchestra and sound effects/foley artists and Pier Paolo Pasolini’s notorious perverse sadomasochistic classic, “Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom,” which actually was out on Criterion years ago, but went out of print (copies have been on Ebay for outrageous prices over the years).
