“Captain Fantastic” has been the little charmer that could ever since debuting at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. The very selective programmers at the Cannes Film Festival chose the indie dramedy to screen on the Croisette, and it went over like gangbusters, with Matt Ross winning the Un Certain Regard Directing prize. But there are more treasures coming from the film, including an unlikely cover of a hair-metal standard.

‘Anvil! The Story of Anvil’ Soars: A Funny, Poignant Tale Of Brotherhood And Perseverance

We’ve been big supporters of the film, “Anvil! The Story of Anvil,” for basic reasons ever since we saw it last June during Sundance At BAM in Brooklyn. Not because it’s a rock documentary (at the end of the day who cares), and not because we’re particularly strong fans of the ’80s metal band’s music (though afterwards, it’s hard not to love them), it’s just simply a fantastically made film with a ton of humor, soul and humanity, period.

There’s no soundtrack to Darren Aronofsky’s “The Wrestler,” starring Mickey Rourke as a aged and washed-up former WWF-style superstar and it doesn’t sound like there’s going to be one. Even Clint Mansell’s minimalist and moody guitar score as played by Guns N’ Roses’ Slash is apparently just over 25 minutes, so even a score disc would be quite short. We digress, make your own soundtrack if you can track down all the songs that are actually out there.

Aronosfky On ‘The Wrestler’ Music: “Two People Connecting Over Ratt — That’s So Much More Unique”

Darren Aronofsky talked to Vulture yesterday and there’s a graph about the music in “The Wrestler.” The NYMag blog notes while there are big bands like Guns N’ Roses are used in the film, there’s also lesser hair and cheese metal bands like Ratt and Accept in the film. Aronofsky’s pretty damn funny in this graph about Mickey Rourke and the music used in the film. (check the Brad Pitt ‘Inglourious’ ‘stache, someone has started a trend).

Around the 8:00 minute mark in this Mickey Rourke interview with David Poland, the actor talks about how he kind of became the de facto music supervisor on the film, persuading Guns N’ Roses and Bruce Springsteen to lend their music to the film and in the case of GNR, he scored a classic track for free!

New Mike Patton & Serj Tankian Song In ‘Body Of Lies’

Fuck, Guns N’ Roses. Yeah, they have a new song called “If The World,” from the overly-long gestating Chinese Democracy featured in Ridley Scott’s “Body Of Lies.” But it’s the track “Bird’s Eye” written by ‘Lies’ score composer Marc Streitenfeld, ex-Faith No More frontman Mike Patton, Bay Area musician Goh Nakamura and System of a Down’s Serj Tankian that’s the real track in the credits worth sticking around for.

First off, holy hell is that GNR track terrible, pure ear bile.

Remember “Body of Lies” aka the movie still in the top contention for Worst Film Poster of 2008? [ed. Seriously, did they spend like two hours on that, max?)

The Ridley Scott-directed film starring Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio as embattled CIA agents in Jordan has zero buzz going for it despite the fact that it’s supposed to be Oscar bait (shit, we just realized it comes out next Friday, no screeners yet?).

“I can’t envision myself being a millionaire,” Anvil frontman/guitarist Steve Ludlow, a k a Lips, told the New York Times a few short weeks ago. “but I can envision myself going to a gig every night and making enough money to make ends meet. That’s a pretty great summary of the underdog life of the Canadian metal band Anvil and their uphill slog of a story as told in the Sacha Gervasi directed documentary, “Anvil!

Horrors Documentary Crashes Sundance, Slash To Play With Anvil

British moppet-haired goth rockers The Horrors are crashing this year’s Sundance film festival with the documentary “Counting In Fives.” Or rather, the filmmakers are crashing the Utah film festival to showcase their doc on the zombie-looking pasty-white Brits who have apparently become a cult-y phenomenon across the pond.

The doc is screening independently from the festival on Friday, January 18th at Marquee, 427 Main Street 9 p.m. The Horrors themselves will be DJ’ing an after party afterwards.
