It’s been a bit of an odd year for Marion Cotillard. On the festival front she failed to connect with “From The Land Of The Moon,” while Xavier Dolan‘s “It’s Only The End Of The World” got a mixed reception from critics at Cannes and still doesn’t have U.S. distribution. Meanwhile, at the multiplex, the WWII spy movie “Allied” flopped and this month’s “Assassin’s Creed” doesn’t look so hot.

It’s not yet clear whether Jamie Dornan will be able to escape the shadow of “Fifty Shades Of Grey,” or be overtaken by it. Dornan has other affairs — winning acclaim for playing a serial murderer in “The Fall” — but he’s best known as Christian Grey for sure, and that’s even before the first sequel to the S&M franchise arrives in February.

The announced titles include the previously confirmed Danny Boyle-directed true story survival tale “127 Hours”; Clint Eastwood’s supernatural “Hereafter” (just announced as the New York Film Festival’s closer); Dustin Lance Black’s directorial debut “What’s Wrong With Virginia?”; the Casey Affleck-directed documentary/performance piece “I’m Still Here” with Joaquin Phoenix; the highly anticipated American remake of “Let The Right One In” by director Matt Reeves, “Let Me In”; the previously hinted Will Ferrell dramedy “Everything Must Go” and Benoit Jacquot’s “Deep in the Woods.”

The Midnight Madness slate has also firmed up its lineup.

A film we called one of the best of 2008, the story revolves around “a doctor who, after believing his wife has been murdered years before (and in fact after being named as a suspect in the case), begins getting mysterious messages suggesting she may still be alive.” It was definitely a film that had a lot of people telling their friends to go see it, while doing their best not to reveal any of the story’s twists, and not surprisingly, the remake rights were acquired by Focus Features and Miramax after the film’s strong box office performance.
