An estimated 500 scripted seasons of TV will air in 2017, and to help you sort the wheat from the chaff, we’re going to look at the first episodes of the most notable of these to help you work out whether it’s worth tuning in every week for them, waiting to binge later, or using the time to finally catch up on “Bosch” or whatever else you’ve been waiting for.

Ugh, update our bad. You can pre-order them now, but none of these discs get shipped until 12/16. I think we were drunk this day.

Tricky little label Varese Saraband is quietly releasing a bunch of scores from films not in theaters yet and at the top of our list is the Alberto Iglesias-penned score to Steven Soderbergh’s “Che.” There’s not a ton of music in both “Che” films, but there’s enough and “Guerrilla,” has some really nice Spanish guitar music that’s really evocative, but generally, much like the movie, the music is understated and doesn’t swell to crescendo-epic cliches.

Steven Soderbergh’s sprawling two-part/ four hour epic, “Che,” about Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara starring 2008 Cannes Best Actor winner Benicio del Toro screened this past weekend to L.A. critics and audiences at the AFI Film Festival.

For many L.A. critics, this was their first crack at the incredibly ambitious work and the contentious political figure and continuing with its reception thus far, reviews were mixed and polarizing.

The L.A. Times got in deep with Soderbergh over the weekend and they noted that some critics think the film is a grand masterwork (we’re pretty much in that camp) and some think its a huge folly.

Picking up in 1965 one year after his United Nations speech, part two of Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Che’ films rightly earns the title of epic once the entire scope and massive breadth of vision is fully absorbed. Again, it’s a remarkable achievement and, while we’re fine with seeing it in two parts, it’s probably all the more breathtaking in one sitting if you’re that fervent a cineaste.

Having mysteriously disappeared, Guevara has actually assumed a disguised identity as an older man, preparing for his clandestine voyage to Bolivia to start another revolutionary campaign.

Since we’re impatient as fuck, we had no choice but to watch Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Che,’ in two separate parts (the full four hour screening is tomorrow, we’re *that* impatient). Today we saw the first half, “The Argentine.” But note…

We have no complaint or quarrel having our “Che” experience cut in half. We found ourselves restless and becoming exhausted by films not even two hours long during TIFF, but part one of Steven Soderbergh’s unsentimental yet intimate depiction of the Cuban revolution was magnetically engrossing with nary a dull second.

We’re un poquito ‘Che’ obsessed, and there’s not too much to report, but a few stories out there today reiterating that the sale of the two-part, four-hour Steven Soderbergh epic is immimenent (proximamente as the trailer said) Which would be nice for bloggers and journalists who probably won’t get a crack at a proper press screening during the upcoming Toronto Int. Film Festival (One could say it’s a democraztized screening which is antithetical or one could call it a screening for all the people which is more in keeping with the view).

Ever read the comments section of Jeffrey Wells’ Hollywood Elsewhere site? For example, pretty much any time the film “Che” comes up a few of the longtime backtalkers bring up the words “mass-murderer” and “terrorist.” They’re not the only ones who feel this way about the Argentinian revolutionary Che Guevara. Apparently a news channel [Fox one must assume?] used an image of Che as an example of a terrorist and it got “Che” star Benicio del Toro fuming in anger.

Yowza, the trailer for the “The Argentine,” the first half of Steven Soderbergh’s four-hour plus, two-part epic “Che” has leaked online. We’re pretty sure the song near the end is from Hans Zimmer’s amazing score to “The Thin Red Line,” which would be appropriate considering they probably have some similar war themes and thoughtful tones, but our Zimmer is at work at the moment. Questions that come up. Will Wild Bunch issue an English-language trailer soon?

It’s like practically Che day here at The Playlist (my Che-adoring grandparents, who literally still have their bedroom adorned with his vistage, would be proud). Two clips from the epic have made it online and they’re below (but beforewarned, they’re just the same AFP clip cut into 2 sections, but in a less shitty embed player). Reuters even-handedly says, “Early reaction to ‘Che’ has been mixed, with reviews questioning its length and Soderbergh’s apparent determination to avoid heightening the drama through Hollywood conventions.”

“As I went into the research of the character I became more and more like a deer in the headlights, more afraid of approaching him because I kept learning,” Del Toro said.

It’s challenging, but still interesting trying to keep up with Cannes when you’re not there – to read things right, to try and take the correct temperature and try not to fall prey to hyperbole one way or another.

Anywoo, things aren’t looking perfectly rosy for Steven Soderbergh’s 4 hour, two-part ‘Che’ biopic (“The Argentine,” and “Guerrilla”). But they’re not looking absymal either. Though, the film went from being the most nervous and almost-maniacally anticipated film of the French film festival to being a polarizing effort that has enamored some critics (Jeffrey Wells for one was practically left exasperated), left others tepid and forced others to call it an ambitious, but “noble failure” (Anne Thompson).

Thank you Jeffrey Wells for getting back to us in a timely fashion. You’re basically the only blogger/writer we can find that is dropping fast, but telling reports on Steven Soderbergh’s “Che” two-part biopic, without being a live-blog-in-theater jagoff about it. Apparently, the second half of the film, “Guerrilla,” slayed as well. He’s also naturally telling us how other bloggers, too slow to file copy, feel about it.

The second half of ‘Che,’ also known as ‘Guerrilla,’ just got out about a half-hour ago, and equally delighted although it’s a different kind of film — tighter, darker (naturally, given the story).
