Reports peg “The Social Network” costing Sony $40-$60 million, which means this number one opening should be more than solid. But then you have to consider prints and advertising – a movie about angry nerds staring at computer screens and occasionally yelling at each other with maximum verbosity doesn’t sell itself. The picture might count as “relevant” and “important” but with a likely costly Oscar campaign coming, Sony’s going to pray this has enough legs to get to $100 million and not settle for $60m.

Weekend Box Office: Shia LeBeouf Now Has Six Straight No. 1 Movies… Who Let This Happen?

“Money Never Sleeps” indeed. Who takes the credit for the “Wall Street” sequel opening? As little as this might mean ($60 million domestic seems like the ceiling for latter-day Oliver Stone), it’s a victory when studios can get a September release to an opening around $20 million. Credit to the headliners – the combination of one-time heavy hitter Michael Douglas in his signature role (akin to Stallone returning to Rocky or Rambo) and box office kid dynamo Shia LeBeouf likely meant a safe bet for curious viewers, in addition to fans of the $43 million-grossing first film twenty-three years ago.

Review: ‘Legend Of The Guardians’ A Big Pile Of Ga’Hoole

When the credits roll at the end of “Legend Of The Guardians” you might be surprised to see the credit ‘Directed By Zack Snyder.’ That’s right, the man behind “Watchmen” and “300” has made a 3D animated children’s film, and while the director is known for his highly stylized (if otherwise empty) work, none of that is in evidence here. Wheezing, lifeless and tagged with a ridiculously cumbersome title “Legend Of The Guardians: The Owls Of Ga’Hoole” we left the theater with little idea about what the Guardians or the Ga’Hooles exactly were and we’re pretty sure the kids in attendance at the screening were equally baffled.

Just when we thought we’d seen the worst trailer of the year, with Kevin Spacey as Jack Abramoff in “Bagman,” along comes Zack Snyder to lower the bar… The “300” director is finishing up his masturbatory female-led actioner “Sucker Punch” at the moment, but he’s found the time to direct a CGI-animated version of popular kids books Guardians of Ga’hoole which hits in IMAX 3D this September, and a new trailer has just premiered over at Yahoo.

Here is your first look at Zack Snyder’s upcoming children’s animated feature, “Legend Of The Guardians,” which was produced by the same team behind George Miller’s ‘Happy Feet’ films, Animal Logic.

Snyder originally described the film, based on Kathryn Lasky’s books, as “Lord Of The Rings” with owls. The story centering on Soren, a young owl enthralled by his father’s epic stories of the Guardians of Ga’Hoole, a mythic band of winged warriors who had fought a great battle to save all of owlkind from the evil Pure Ones.

Tim Burton & Timur Bekmambetov Produce ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter’; Warner Bros. Developing ‘Space Invaders’ & ‘Barry Munday’ Trailer Arrives

We mentioned it briefly this morning, but here are a couple more details. Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov have acquired the rights to Seth Grahame-Smith novel, “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.” “The novel depicts the 16th U.S. president as an axe-throwing, highly trained vampire killer,” and Grahame-Smith also wrote “Pride And Prejudice And Zombies” so expect something in that vein. They will produce while a yet to be named director will helm the picture. “Alice In Wonderland” was terrible so our interest in this is pretty much zilch.

“The Machinist” screenwriter Scott Kosar has been hired to write the script for “Vlad,” which takes an action-oriented look at Dracula, or Vlad the Impaler. Charlie Hunnam (the blonde British kid of “Undeclared” who is all grown up now and looking like a real-life Thor) wrote the original draft and told EW in December that there would be no vampires in the film. “We don’t touch on vampirism. That was my one non-negotiable area when we were developing it,”he said, though it sounds like with a new writer on board, this might have changed.

Zack Snyder Shoves More Up His ‘Ga’hoole’

Zack Snyder is a busy these days, currently working on two films, “Sucker Punch” which will be a giant fanboy fetish fest as it’s going to be a bunch of (probably) scantily clad girls holding big phallic machine guns, and the horribly titled “Guardians of Ga’hoole” an Australian animated fantasy that will need a new title if it wants play anywhere in the world without garnering immature snickering.

The latter is already well into production, and slated for release on December 9th, 2010 in Australia by Snyder’s home team, Warner Brothers and Legendary Pictures.

He’s back! One of everyone’s favorite “directors” to bag on thinks he’s got his eye on a hot comic book adaptation property… except he doesn’t. Brett Ratner, through a development deal with his beautifully named Rat Entertainment and Reliance Big Entertainment (another terrific name), is set to direct the Rob Liefeld property, “Youngblood,” that was infamous for setting a precedence for ridiculously out-of-proportion, X-Men-aping style of comic-book art back in the ’90s.
