That’s a whole other level of hype. And that’s exactly what Araki has done, as Charli XCX is the latest to join the cast of his upcoming “I Want Your Sex.” Is it any surprise that this is how the British music icon caps off “Brat Summer”?

Not only did he appear in “Wildcat” just last year, but he has two films likely to come out over the next six months, “The Old Guy” and the highly anticipated “Saturday Night.” Now, it appears he’s landed a lead role in the forthcoming drama, “I Want Your Sex.”

According to Black Bear, Cooper Hoffman is expected to star opposite Olivia Wilde in Gregg Araki’s new film, “I Want Your Sex.” If you’re a fan of Araki’s work, it should come as no surprise that “I Want Your Sex” is being described as a “provocative film.” The plot follows a young guy (Hoffman) who gets a job working for a renowned artist (Wilde).

The culminating film of the director’s “Apocalypse” trilogy, the movie has always been hard to track down for various reasons. For one, it never received a proper DVD release, only VHS and Laserdisc. But it’s also the most hedonistic of Araki’s early work, with the MPAA and Fine Line Features (the film’s distributor) demanding that Araki cut out explicit sequences after its 1997 premiere at Sundance.

Today, the nonprofit Sundance Institute announced today the first two films in the lineup for the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and they are the 25th Anniversary and digital restoration screening of “SLAM” and the uncensored director’s cut and restoration of “The Doom Generation.”

Directed by Marc Levin and written by Levin, Saul Williams, Sonja Sohn, and Richard Stratton, “SLAM” was first introduced to audiences at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, where it premiered in the U.S.

Even teen TV has leaned into prestige, with artistic, poignant shows like “13 Reasons Why” and “Sex Education” snapping up staggering viewership numbers. If you’re a millennial who, like me, raised yourself on delicious bilge like “Gossip Girl,” “90210,” “Pretty Little Liars,” or “Teen Wolf,” it can be hard to adjust to this squeaky-clean world of budgetless studios and uninhibited creation.

This year, the festival has taken off like a rocket with its announcements and has already unveiled the bulk of its lineup. Still, that said, there’s always more to come.
Highlights include new projects from filmmakers like Stephen Frears, Amy Berg and Gregg Araki’s new work with executive-producer Steven Soderbergh.

Sophomoric, silly and pretty much a high-concept sitcom in origin, production value and tone, Gregg Araki’s candy-coated “Kaboom” is ridiculous, ultra-camp and likely only appeals to his small band of constituents (and the seal-trained TIFF audiences that will laugh at anything), but the wacky picture admittedly does contain a few silly delights.

Kicking off with a strange, clue-laden dream, the absurd rom-com/murder mystery stars Thomas Dekker as Smith, a bisexual Californian college student about to go down a rabbit hole of cults, conspiracies and general weirdness.

With TIFF set to unofficially kick off the awards season in two weeks, North America’s biggest film festival is putting the finishing touches on their massive lineup. This morning, over 50 more titles were added to what is already a very full slate.

The Contemporary World Cinema program has certainly grabbed our attention with a number of high-profile films catching our eye. Receiving North American premieres are two highly anticipated titles (at least by us anyway), Kelly Reichardt’s gritty western tragedy “Meek’s Cutoff” and Tom Tykwer’s “Three.” A couple of intriguing titles making their World Premiere are Icíar Bollaín’s post-modern “Even The Rain” starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Bent Hamer’s (“Kitchen Stories”) latest “Home For Christmas.” The inconsistent but always fascinating Tsui Hark will unveil “Detective Dee And The Mystery Of The Phantom Flame” to North American audiences while a selection of films that played Cannes earlier this year including Feng Xiaogang’s “Aftershock,” Pablo Trapero’s “Carancho,” Oliver Schmitz’s “Life, Above All,” Sergei Loznitsa’s “My Joy” and, pretty much already a lock for a Best Foreign Film Oscar nomination (the critics loved this one at Cannes), Xavier Beauvois’ “Of Gods And Men.”

The Masters program also offers a selection of titles from some established auteurs led by Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s head-scratching wonder “Uncle Boonme Who Can Recall Past Lives,” Ken Loach’s Iraq war drama “Route Irish,” Jean-Luc Godard’s total mindfuck “Film Socialisme.” Other titles of note include Jerzy Skolimowski’s Vincent Gallo-as-terrorist film “Essential Killing,” Catherine Breillat’s latest take on a fairy tale, “Sleeping Beauty,” Lee-Chang Dong’s “Poetry” and Jia Zhang-ke’s total snoozefest “I Wish I Knew.”

Over in the Vanguard section are a number of titles from new talents on the horizon.

One of the biggest questions we heard on the Croisette this year was, who was going to win? With an In Competition year that was regarded by many as the weakest at Cannes in decades, it seemed to be a guessing game who would emerge victorious from a relatively unremarkable pack of films.

Well, the winners have been announced, and while for the most part it’s pretty much everything we would’ve expected, Tim Burton and the rest of the jury saved the biggest surprise for the top honor.

There’s a strange, but not surprising disconnect going on at the Cannes Film Festival. Once known as the Olympics of filmmaking, the prestige of the festival hasn’t diminished (although this year was clearly even weaker than last year), but it’s evident that the only North American buyers acquiring films at one of the most illustrious film festivals in the world are indie studios.

Arguably, that’s always been the case, but it’s even more pronounced this year.

Three clips from the uber-transgressive filmmaker Gregg Araki’s latest film, “Kaboom” have surfaced since its Cannes screening. The film finds him back in the wheelhouse of his earlier works. The plot follows a college student, Thomas Dekker, who trips hard on hallucinogens and then believes he witnessed the murder of the mysterious red-haired girl who’s been haunting his dreams. We weren’t big fans of Araki’s previous schlocky, sexually transgressive films that were clearly made to shock and provoke with very little artistry going on (“Doom Generation,” “Totally Fucked Up”) but with 2004’s “Mysterious Skin” the director proved that he’s maturing by leaps and bounds, and with the right material, he can really make material sing.

Former L.A. Weekly music critic Gregg Araki found critical acclaim after nearly 17 years in the film industry with 2004’s “Mysterious Skin.” The film starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Brady Corbet as victims of an act of pedophilia when they were young boys. Though the film wasn’t without its problems (a particular hokey moment with Levitt’s character yelling “I am so sick of this stinkin’ little buttcrack of a town!”) but it was also very raw, dark and downright strange.

So the almost complete official lineup for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival arrived earlier this morning. As always, the list was exciting and surprising both for what was included and what didn’t make the prestigious festival that is the unofficial kick off for the upcoming year of films. This year, in a mad dash to watch all the films that were submitted and in order to give a few films more time to finish up (*ahem* “Tree Of Life”), the Cannes organizers have left five slots on their traditionally 20 strong In Competition programming open, so some of the films below may end up getting slotted in the upcoming weeks.

Aka the year where we celebrate *every* movie released.

Here’s our 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 picks.

In creating and arguing over all our lists, 2005 was easily the most difficult year (yes, we’re going to say that about every year) and it’s perhaps fitting that the mid-way point of the decade yielded the best crop of pictures. We could have easily listed 20 films here, but once again, stuck to 10, uh sort of… (and since we’ve saved documentaries for another feature, it helps give us breathing room).

Filming has begun on filmmaker Gregg Araki’s latest film, “Kaboom,” his first film since 2007’s “Smiley Face,” which was a creative left turn for the indie filmmaker and perhaps a bid for wider acceptance. Leaving the characteristic sexual teen angst stories behind, the stoner comedy was essentially an attempt to aim at mainstream audiences.

Despite a lead of Anna Faris (who was actually quite excellent in the otherwise mediocre film) and supporting roles by Adam Brody, Danny Masterson, John Krasinski and Jane Lynch, “Smiley Face,” did not connect with mainstream audiences and basically came and went taking in a pittance of $179, 000 worldwide (First Look Pictures — ahem, the same small studio putting out Werner Herzog’s “Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans” — put that one out and obviously didn’t have the juice to push it at all).

Remember “Smiley Face”? It was the film by normally sexually transgressive filmmaker Gregg Araki that was supposed to come out on 4.20.07 (4.20, get it, get it?!?).

Then it got bumped to late summer, then bumped again and then eventually got shelved to a straight-to-DVD release. However, at the last minute it made it into a few select theaters in NYC and L.A. and it gained some glowing reviews.

The Village Voice loved it, Premiere’s Glen Kenny called it, “mind-bogglingly funny” (he placed it as 19 on his top 25 list of ’07) and we all of a sudden became intrigued.

Trangressive, gender-bending filmmaker, Gregg Araki‘s (“Mysterious Skin,” “The Doom Generation“) new film is a pot-smoking comedy, “Smiley Face,” that’s on the head and shoulders of lead actress, Anna Faris (the first stoner movie to star a girl?). It was originally scheduled to come out 4.20 (duuuude), but that obviously passed. The film is now set for July 27, according to EW’s summer film preview (which isn’t really online, but this Faris interview is).

Let’s face it, his films aren’t great and polarizing at best (loathsome to many), but he’s always had some choice noisy and shoe-gaze-y soundtracks, which we’ve always loved him for (and we’re likely going to do a Soundtrack Series volume on him one of these days, but not likely anytime soon.
