The genre has reached a saturation point: the stories are becoming thinner and are being repeated in different forms until they feel threadbare. A category that’s broad enough to include everything from “In Cold Blood” to “My Favorite Murder” also runs the gamut from respectful to exploitative, with more than a few recent series falling on the wrong side of the line.

Because it needs to take up so much running time, its few good ideas about characters, alive and dead, lose much of their impact. And while the series achieves a lighthearted gothic tone to match the haunted house it mostly takes place in, both its horror and comedy are used cheaply.

STARZ’s new series “Shining Vale” takes on the concept – balancing humor and horror along the way. The ambitious project comes from Jeff Astrof and Sharon Horgan. Astrof previously produced and wrote on the series “Angie Tribeca” while Horgan is best known as a producer, actress, and writer on “Catastrophe.”

Too bad. In “Blank Page,” the series’ most dense episode to date, the audience meets no less than three new characters, get further information on the established player’s pre/post-pandemic, and comes to understand the series’ central conflict: all packed into a collection of dizzying location and time-jumps that demand one’s full attention.

But up until now, he’s never stepped behind the camera. In the new dramedy, “Phil,” the actor-turned-director not only is the man at the helm but also the star of the show.

As seen in the trailer, “Phil” tells the story of, uh, Phil (Kinnear), a depressed dentist that begins to investigate the life of one of his patients after he learns that the patient committed suicide.

When the series began in 2013, the show was one of the first Netflix Originals that was always part of the awards season discussion. For years, the series served a pillar for the streaming giant. However, as the series has progressed, it seems the episodic story of the ruthless Underwoods and their pawns has stagnated leading to a frustrating final season that takes far too long to get going.

They aren’t the kind of movies that light up the multiplex, but they are the kind of you’ll think about for far longer than the latest high calorie blockbuster. Now, two years after his last effort, “Little Men,” the director is lining up faces old and new for an intriguing new project.

An array of film festival and arthouse faves including Isabelle Huppert, Jérémie Renier, Marisa Tomei, Greg Kinnear, and Aki Kaurismaki regular André Wilms have signed up for “A Family Vacation.” Co-written by Sachs and his regular collaborator Mauricio Zacharias, the story follows three generations of a family grappling with a life-changing experience during one day of a vacation in Sintra, Portugal, a historic town known for its dense gardens and fairy-tale villas and palaces.

However, in today’s more diverse media environment, some SNL alums have discovered more success by not trying to exactly replicate a broad television formula, but by finding a more idiosyncratic tone for bringing their sensibility to movies.

Iñárritu‘s TV series “The One Percent” been kicking around? We had it on our list of The 20 Most Anticipated TV Shows Of 2015. Yep, it’s been that long, and while for most shows that kind of delay would mean death, backers MRC are sticking with it, even though Starz, who gave the project a straight-to-series order in 2014, have now backed out of their deal to screen “The One Percent” in the U.S.

However, the actress is blazing a comeback trail. Next month she returns in “Bridget Jones’s Baby,” she’s got the Keanu Reeves legal thriller “The Whole Truth” in the can, and then there’s “Same Kind Of Different As Me,” a syrupy looking drama that appears misguided at best.

Sachs’ latest, “Little Men,” is as modest as its title, and lacks the quiet majesty of its predecessor. But it covers a lot of the same ground, using NYC as the backdrop for a simple story, about a small personal crisis that represents something much larger.
