Macedonian Australian film director and screenwriter Goran Stolevski is quickly becoming quite the name and a prodigious one. While he may not have been on a lot of radars before, given he was working in short films and TV, but he caught everyone’s eye with 2022’s witch/metamorphosis horror “You Won’t Be Alone” starring Noomi Rapace, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival to much acclaim, with critics noting its Terrence Malick-like approach.

The writer-director Goran Stolevski, who made nine short films before his feature debut at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, shows no signs of slowing down. Though that Noomi Rapace-led bildungsroman was ultimately too unwieldy, it introduced a director with staggering vision.

Stolevski’s second full-length film, “Of An Age,” shows off his expansive sensibility on a more intimate scale.

In Macedonia, there’s a legend about a bitter, lonely crone named “Old Maid Maria.” She wanders the woods in search of vulnerable newborn babies ripe with blood to feed on, allowing her to remain alive. In the opening of Goran Stolevski’s gruesome fairytale horror story, “You Won’t Be Alone,” Old Maid Maria (Anamaria Marinca), a menacing body of scar tissue and wispy gray hair, comes upon baby Nevena. To spare the child’s life, her anguished mother makes a vow to Maria: If she allows Nevena to live, when the girl turns 16, she can have her as a surrogate daughter.

Every once in a while, a trailer for a horror thriller film drops and you can tell it’s likely going to be something special. And it’s safe to say that “You Won’t Be Alone” is shaping up to be one of those films.

Again, judging just based on the trailer, “You Won’t Be Alone” looks to be a beautiful, stylish period thriller that feels very much in the realm as something like Robert Eggers’ “The Witch.” Except in this film, the witch in question isn’t being seduced by evil but instead is dreaming of being more human.
