Crime stories have a long and celebrated lineage in film. Like horror, it’s a fun, but often disappointing genre. You have to wade through a lot of shit to get to the gold. But when they’re good, they’re really good. Great modern gangster films – the past decade has seen some bona fide new classics with “The Pusher Trilogy,” “City of God,” “Gomorrah,” “A Prophet” and even the recent “Animal Kingdom” – transcend and twist the genre, revitalizing what was once rote.

Criterion Adds ‘Gomorrah,’ ‘Downhill Racer’ & ‘A Christmas Tale’ To Its November DVD Release Slate

The Criterion Collection has announced its releases for November and if you were hoping for Steven Soderbergh’s “Che” (which was supposed to hit in the fall), you’re going to have to hope that December also means fall cause that disc hasn’t arrived.

However, there are some good picks and they are as follow.

Michael Ritchie’s 1969 Olympic skier film, “Downhill Racer” starring a young Robert Redford and Gene Hackman. It hits on November 17.

Btw, you should read this very-solid, “History of Inglourious Basterds” piece that goes back some 10-or more years to recap the long-brewing gestation and history of the film. We only wish they would have actually provided links to their quotes and sourced better.

We’d love to know what critic called the Oscar-snubbed/Martin Scorsese endorsed, Italian crime drama, “Gomorrah,” “THE GREATEST MAFIA MOVIE EVER MADE,” because this is patently untrue and engages it outright ludicrous hyperbole (oh, it’s this quack), but we suppose it’s good press for a very deserving film.

Mattaeo Garrone’s five-tiered disparate vignettes film wasn’t the best thing we saw at the Toronto International Film Festival and tended to be somewhat overhyped, but it was super solid (we had to just manage expectations a little bit cause people were foaming at the mouth).

‘Gomorrah’ Doesn’t “Deliver The Goods” Says Foreign AMPAS Member

Man, this isn’t going to quell the outrage. Jeffrey Wells spoke to a senior member of the Foreign AMPAS committee and they don’t think that snubbing “Gomorrah” is as egregious as snubbing last year’s Romanian Cannes big winner “4 Months 3 Weeks And 2 Days.” Which is kind of true, “Gomorrah” isn’t in the class of that film frankly (but it is good, just not quite a masterpiece), but does that mean the committee is admitting to last year’s blunder?

We weren’t gigantic fans of Matteo Garrone’s hyperlinked Italian crime drama “Gomorrah” (though we did like it), but with all the accolades and praise it earned this year (the Grand Prix award at Cannes and an very enthusiastic endorsement from Marty Scorsese), its shortlist snub yesterday from the Oscar Foreign Picture committee cannot be viewed as anything but a major fuck up and oversight on their part.

As we noted yesterday, this is nothing new.

It seems like every year the the foreign-language committee of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences piss us all off with some major snub. Despite winning the Palmed’Or in 2007, Cristian Mungiu’s amazing Romanian abortion drama, “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” was snubbed by the AMPAS Oscar Foreign shortlist as was the brilliant animated French film, “Persepolis” (in 2007 it was Carlos Reygadas’ “Silent Light” and Fatih Akin’s “Edge of Heaven” that were criminally overlooked).

English-Language Trailer For Italy’s Major Foreign Oscar Contender, ‘Gomorrah’

Matteo Garrone’s “Gomorrah” opens February 13, 2009 via IFC Films but there’s no specific date yet for the film, according to publicists for the movie. Martin Scorsese is a big fan of the Italian mafia, multi-vignette laden drama. We saw it at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year. The Italian mob is so pissed off about the incisive and revealing non-fiction novel that this film is based on, they want the writer, Roberto Saviano, as dead as Dillinger.

We’re feeling extremely out-of-sorts and near ill. Trying to catch up…Things that are going help shape this Oscar season.

“Slumdog Millionaire” is again showing its critical muscle. The film was named Film Of The Year, by the Washington, D.C. Critics Poll. Danny Boyle was given director prize, Mickey Rourke’s “The Wrestler” turn scored Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor was nabbed by Heath Ledger’s ferocious perfomance in “The Dark Knight.” Meryl Streep won Best Actress in “Doubt.”

Continuing its Foreign Film domination in award season, Italy’s “Gomorra” won five awards at the 21st Annual European Film Awards.

If you haven’t already heard, “Gomorrah” producer Domenico Procacci has made the decision to submit the lauded gritty Italian drama and potential Best Foreign Language nominee into other categories too, a la “Life is Beautiful” to heighten its Oscar chances outside just the foreign ghetto category.

While “Gomorrah” isn’t Oscar material the way “Life is Beautiful” was, Procacci says, “I know it’s a long shot, but I think the film deserves it.” You know who else agrees with him?

‘Gomorrah’ Moves Up Release Date To Improve Oscar Chances

Matteo Garrone’s gritty drama, “Gomorrah,” which tells the story of corruption and crime in Naples via the infamous Cammora Mafia, is currently moving its U.S. release date to December, which makes it eligible for Oscar consideration outside of Best Foreign-Language film.

“Gomorrah” is based off Roberto Saviano’s non-fiction novel of the same name, which caused enough trouble that Saviano has been forced into hiding with an armed guard escort due to the fact that the Cammora family wants him dead for the attention the movie has brought to them.

In Contention brings us a look at new posters for Darren Aronofsky’s “The Wrestler” and Clint Eastwood’s “Gran Torino” respectively both of which I love especially the latter’s red carpet poster (pity Rourke looks so odd standing next to it, poor guy, I guess he looks as good as he possibly can), also noting that on the WB FYC webpage, an original song (written by Jamie Callum) ‘Gran Torino’ bid has popped up. It better be good because there is nothing worse on Oscar night than having to sit through a bunch of lame ass performances of lame ass songs.

‘Gomorrah’ Film Brings Attention Back On Too-Revealing Non-Fiction Novel; Mafia Want Him Dead By Xmas

Remember “Gommorah,” the Cannes-winning drama, we saw at TIFF that takes a raw look at corruption and crime in Italy and specifically the Cammora mafia in Naples? As we wrote in our review, ” Such an disquieting and trenchant look was the [original] non-fiction novel that [the movie is based on], its author Roberto Saviano had to go into hiding and is still apparently accompanied by armed guards wherever he goes.”

Well, the movie and its success has obviously brought international attention to the book and this mafia family, so the Cammora has a new Christmas wish: They want Saviano dead by by Christmas.

Wednesday saw the foreign language film selectors taking off their thinking caps and resting on the hope that their official submissions for Best Foreign Language Film appeal to the temperamental Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Cinematical notes that this year 51 countries submitted what they consider their finest products, from the usuals such as Italy and France, and others like Jordan who submitted a film, “Captain Abu Raed,” for the first time ever.

As per usual, Cannes favorites are dominating this year’s Foreign Oscar picks. Italy has picked the crime-mafia film, “Gomorrah,”to represent their cinema, Turkey has selected “Three Monkeys” to epitomize the best of their films, and Israel has chosen the lauded and animated Beirut war reminiscence, “Waltz With Bashir,” to stand for their country, which also has a shot at getting a nomination for Best Animated Picture as well says Variety (man, that would be great to see something that’s not a kid’s film get nominated in this category for once).

After Cannes, there were quite a few films that not only sounded fantastic, they won a bunch of the top awards too. At the top of our to-see list was “Hunger,” “The Class,” and Italian director Mattaeo Garrone’s “Gomorrah.”

The winner of the Grand Prix Award at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival was Garrone’s adaptation of the true-life expose of the Italy’s most infamous mafia organization, the Cammora. Such an disquieting and trenchant look was the non-fiction novel that its author, Roberto Saviano had to go into hiding and is still apparently accompanied by armed guards wherever he goes.

Telluride Film Festival Will Screen First (Small) Peek At Fincher’s ‘Benjamin Button’

We’ve never been to the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado (you’d have to send us), but it’s an amazing film festival if you consider this insanely quirky aspect of the fest: passes are sold out waaay in advance, like completely sold out. And when do they announce the line-up? What films will actually be playing? Umm, the day of, basically. Telluride starts proper tomorrow morning, but some films have been screened today and the final line-up just went out.

Cannes 2008: ‘The Class’ Schools The Competition; Benicio Del Toro Wins Best Actor For ‘Che’

So much for Steven Soderbergh’s “Che,” Jury head Sean Penn’s supposed biased lefty leanings and Clint Eastwood’s “The Changeling/I’m Not Really Sure What I’m Called, or The Exchange,” the 2008 Cannes top honor went to the French classroom film, “Entre les Murs” (“The Class”), directed by Laurent Cantet.

Prior to Sunday’s (May 25) award announcement, pundit speculation was predicting that Penn – the governor of the Cannes 2008 tribune – would campaign the jury to award the Palme d’Or to either Soderbergh’s four-hour two-part biopic of Che Guevara because of his sympathetic pinko predilections, or Eastwood’s Change, err ‘Exchange,’ because the actor had worked with him before (“Mystic River”) and because the Dirty Harry director had never been awarded with the top prize all these years (and because ‘Exchange’ was one of the few American films that was unanimously liked by the notoriously picky Cannes crowd).
