Although movie stars still help sell in these projects (often by boasting how much they do their own stunts), it’s the filmmakers who are now the real ass-kickers. After the likes of thrilling projects like Chad Stahelski’s “John Wick” films, David Leitch’s “Atomic Blonde” and “Deadpool 2,” and J.J.

However, when you take away his work as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his filmography has quite a few misses. There’s his work in the “Ghostbusters” reboot in 2016, then you have the failed attempt to reboot the “Men in Black” franchise. Let’s not forget about the middling “Spiderhead” and “12 Strong.” But there is one shining star in his non-Marvel work—the high-octane action film, “Extraction.” Now, it looks like Hemsworth, along with filmmaker Sam Hargrave and producers/writers, the Russo Brothers are ready to turn that hit Netflix film into an official franchise with an upcoming sequel.

It’s well-trodden land for filmmakers, for sure. But Apple TV+ is hoping there’s still plenty of interest in the sci-fi concept ahead of its upcoming series, “Invasion.”

The knives were out, the critics were skeptical, and the idea of story cobbled out of kiddie ride seemed preposterous. Astonishingly, and against all odds, director Gore Verbinski invigorated the often-dismissed pirate genre, with a cavalier spirit and rollicking, cartoonish exuberance. Add the surprisingly inspired performance by Johnny Depp as the almost immediately iconic Jack Sparrow and the result was swashbuckling entertainment with a capital E.

An unfeasibly charming film full of little wisdoms and quiet comforts where we might expect to find provocations, its only deception is that it is so much richer than it seems at first glance. Most cinephiles are well acquainted with Jarmusch-ian minimalism, and the trick of reading more into his droll silences and laconic pauses than exists up on the screen.

The actor has a role in Martin Scorsese‘s highly anticipated “Silence,” but first comes his low key performance in Jim Jarmusch‘s patient “Paterson.”
