One of the more unexpected viral moments of this year’s Golden Globes actually happened well before the ceremony and telecast even began. Thanks to a picture shared on Twitter, “Little Women” filmmaker Greta Gerwig was shown in an empty theater all dressed up and by herself. The picture was shared as a silly way of pointing out that Gerwig was the first A-lister to find her seat at the ceremony.

Best Supporting Actress in a TV program winner Patricia Arquette wearing a Viking helmet for most of the night. Tiffany Haddish taking over the mic at the Netflix shindig and demonstrating someone might want to sign her to a record contract. And, despite only two wins for the company overall, most of the partiers heading to the aforementioned Netflix soiree to be seen and pay respects (Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Scarlett Johansson all made a stop).

If nothing else, the 2020 Golden Globe Awards was a mercurial and occasionally jarring tonal affair, veering from deeply-earnest tributes and speeches to moments of bitter sarcasm (ahem, Ricky Gervais), often in the space of only a few seconds. Part of that had to do with Gervais’ knife’s edge performance as host — no doubt, the star-studded auditorium didn’t exactly warm up to his occasionally-savage opening monologue — and part of it had to do with the truly surprising crop of winners, from “Missing Link” (beating out two Disney blockbusters for Best Animated Motion Picture) to the night’s big victor “1917,” which triumphed over expected winner “The Irishman” for Best Motion Picture – Drama.

Are you ready for some Hollywood Foreign Press Association fun?  Yes, it’s that time of year again. That moment when Hollywood convenes on the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton to watch 80 or so members of the HFPA crown the winners of the 2020 Golden Globes.  Of course, they’ll also see Tom Hanks and Ellen DeGeneres honored with the Cecile B DeMille and Carol Burnett Awards, respectively.  But, again, despite the millions they give to deserving charities, film conservation groups and press advocacy organizations it’s still the HFPA.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association continues to fascinate, perplex, and frustrate the industry at large.  Despite its impressive philanthropic achievements (that broadcast rights money has to go somewhere), the HFPA appears to have gotten too smart for its own good.  At least that’s the case when it comes to studios and networks figuring out if their films, programs, and stars are going to get coveted Golden Globes nominations every year.

The HFPA and NBC have determined the airdate for the 77th Golden Globes and they haven’t been scared off by an earlier Oscars telecast date.  The 2020 Globes will take place on Sunday, Jan. 5.  That will make it the fourth telecast in a row to take place on the first Sunday after New Year’s Day.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced in August that the 2020 Oscars will take place on Feb.
