The HFPA’s choices on Sunday night had many perplexed. Best Picture winners “Green Book” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” were not the films anyone expected them to choose in those categories.  Many were aware the organization loved Peter Farrelly’s melodrama, but still expected them to select “The Favourite” for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy.  The adoration of “Rhapsody” was also well known but supposed Oscar-frontrunner “A Star is Born” was still thought of as the appropriate choice in the Best Picture – Drama category (“Star” was the Oscar frontrunner and the HFPA doesn’t like to be “wrong”).

This year’s Golden Globes had quite a few surprises, but then again it wouldn’t be the Golden Globes if there weren’t. Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg started the show with some playful jokes with the audience, the legendary Carol Burnett received an honorary award recognizing her decades of work, and some nominees may have received flu shots?

When it came to the awards, “The Americans” final season earned Best Drama Series and Netflix’s “The Kominsky Method” surprised with Best Comedy Series.

Updated: Well, it was quite the upset. “Bohemian Rhapsody” bested “A Star Is Born” and won the night’s Best Picture and Best Actor prizes in Drama. The Comedy or Musical category was mostly dominated by “Green Book.” More analysis and more tomorrow. Stay tuned for our Best and Worst list recapping the show.

The night when the worlds of film and television unite is almost upon us.  The Hollywood Foreign Press Association are set to open their doors to their annual party where alcohol is encouraged, the winners take it seriously and the losers remind themselves that, hey, it’s just the Golden Globes.  This year, however, the HFPA picks will have many consultants and studio executives on the edge of their seat.

It’s safe to say Henry Golding probably doesn’t realize how big a star he is yet.  The 31-year-old Malaysian actor just complted a five-month swing where he was introduced to the world as Nick Young in Jon M. Chu’s “Crazy Rich Asians” and as Blake Lively‘s suspicious husband in Paul Feig’s “A Simple Favor.”  And as we discuss the roller coaster introduction to Hollywood in the swank Beverly Hills Hotel, he seems assured he still has some anonimity left.

Yes, it’s that time of year again.  A moment in our lives with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association breaks hearts and provides false hope to other struggling awards contenders.  The Golden Globe nominations are almost upon us.  Are you ready to bask in their glory?

Now, it goes without saying that the HFPA is a curious bunch.  International “journalists” (granted, a few are quite reputable) that have different conflicting agendas and, arguably, barely watch enough television to actually hand out awards in those categories.

Word leaked this morning that two films that many considered slam dunks for the Golden Globes Musical or Comedy categories were submitting as Dramas instead.  And, no surprise, even in a competitive season such as this, some of the overreaction on social media was a bit much.

As of Wednesday, October 10th, Warner Bros.’ box office and critical hit “A Star Is Born” and 20th Century Fox and New Regency’s potential crowdpleaser “Bohemian Rhapsody” appear to be submitting in the Drama category.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association still hasn’t set a broadcaster for the 2019 Golden Globe Awards, but there is officially a date.  As expected, the organization revealed the 76th edition of the Golden Globes will take place on Sunday, Jan. 6.  The nominations will be announced a month earlier on Thursday, December 6.

The telecast should once again pop up on NBC, but the HFPA is still in negotiations with the network.

There is a sound of relief around Los Angeles this afternoon and it’s not because everyone is finally seeing “Avengers: Infinity War” tonight.  No, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced key dates for the 2019 Oscar season and for the first time in two years have avoided announcing the Oscar nominations during the heart of the Sundance Film Festival, an event that delivered two Best Picture nominees last year.
