It may be pouring in Los Angeles this morning, but it was a glorious day for many of the actors, writers and directors who were nominated for 2019 Golden Globes. Here’s a rundown of their reactions.

The Golden Globes have always been known as the antidote to the stuffy Oscars. There’s drinks, an open bar, tables with food, a lot of wandering around in between commercials, it’s a very different vibe from the Academy Awards. And with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting for so many years in a row, the Globes, while lightweight in merit, were, in recent years, definitely seen as the more entertaining, less humorless show.

As we ponder the Hollywood Foreign Press Association‘s potential votes for the illustrious Golden Globes let us not forget there are three, um, golden rules to follow when predicting the winners.

First, they don’t like to be wrong when it comes to film winners.  HFPA members do not like the idea of selecting a film, director or actor and then having their selections losing the eventual Oscar.

Meryl Streep wants to set the records straight. Moreover, she wants to set the record straight with Rose McGowan who has become a champion of the #MeToo movement that has swept Hollywood and the nation.  In fact, it turns out she waited all weekend for McGowan to call her about comments the actress made over Streep’s characterization of Harvey Weinstein.

Earlier this month after Streep commented on Weinstein’s actions Rose tweeted the following noting the former movie mogul’s actions were a “crime” and not just “disgraceful”:

Over the weekend, in tweets now deleted, McGowan took Streep and other actresses to task for their plan to wear black dresses as a form of protest at the Golden Globes on Jan.

It was curious to many that the HFPA’s annual lifetime achievement honor, the Cecil B. DeMille Award, was not announced by the time the 75th Golden Globes nominations were revealed on Monday.  We may never find out why there was a delay, but for NBC it was worth the wait.  Tonight, the HFPA announced the Oprah Winfrey will receive the award during the Globes’ Jan. 7 telecast.

As strange as it might be that a hundred or so international journalists have such sway over awards season thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and the Golden Globes, we have to say that we always enjoy nominations morning: the HFPA very much march to the beat of their own drum, and their picks rarely fail to induce eyebrow raises, adding a touch of unpredictability to an awards season.

The HFPA giveth and, boy, the HFPA taketh away.  On the film side this year’s Golden Globes nods were mostly devoid of embarrassing nominations of the “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen” or “The Tourist” variety, but the foreign press members still find ways to put their foot in their mouth (we’ll get to why eventually).  As for the television nods the HFPA seems to relish pushing new actresses (rarely actors) so much that even in this era of Peak TV they are overlooking performances that are much more deserving than the shiny new object (metaphorically speaking) that popped up in their screener pile.

It’s that time of year again. That annual rite of passage where movie and TV fans hold their tongue for the 83 or so members of the venerable Hollywood Foreign Press Association (aka HFPA) to shower the global news marketplace with their Golden Globes nominations.  The irony is that in 2017 the HFPA’s little January fete seems like comfort food compared to the constant craziness going on in the world in general  (or at least in the White House).
