Historically, Labor Day Weekend closes the more-or-less explosive summer movie season not with a bang, but a whimper, and this weekend doesn’t look like it’s going to buck that overall trend. Perhaps because filmgoers are fatigued by successive summer blockbusters clamoring for their attention (though this year, maybe not so much), or because studios have become wary of the date, it has become an uncomfortable no man’s land between the big-budget actioner period and the awards-hopeful drama season.

The heat may be starting to die down, but the box office manages to pick up some much needed steam this weekend. Robert Rodriguez‘s long-anticipated “Machete” hopes to slash away the competition, attracting the action fans still hungry for blood after last month’s “The Expendables.” Drew Barrymore stars opposite real-life on/off beau Justin Long in “Going the Distance,” though we still wish she’d find the time to team up with ex-husband Tom Green at some point (jk).

Anyone who’s been in a long distance relationship knows that, by its very nature, it’s marked by dizzying highs when you’re together, painful lows when you’re apart and mostly by a tough middle ground that you learn to accept during the long stretches between visits. It’s a difficult road. But director Nanette Burnstein does her best to address those difficulties in the tonally strange “Going The Distance,” which wavers between raunchy R-rated comedy and tender relationship rom-com with halting success.

A few release date shifts and new adds to note today.

Nanette Burstein’s “Going The Distance” long-distance relationship rom-com starring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long (two real-life ex paramours of course) has been bumped a week from an August 27 release date to September 3. Nothing major there as the film’s prospects don’t look great either way. Burstein has the goodwill earned from the documentary “American Teen” going for her, but that’s not likely going to help her outside film geek circles.

Nanette Burstein, known for the documentary “American Teen” and earning an Oscar doc nomination for “On the Ropes,” has a trailer for her first narrative film “Going the Distance.” Aside from being a fairly odd choice to start off your narrative film career with a romcom, does anyone else find Justin Long and Drew Barrymore awkward together? Maybe Charlie Day will make this worth seeing, but probably not.
&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;a href=”http://video.msn.com/?mkt=en-us&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;from=sp&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;fg=MsnEntertainment_MoviesTrailersGP2_a&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;vid=d60f3cf8-2176-4b2b-b797-de1384117257″ target=”_new” title=”Exclusive: ‘Going the Distance’ Trailer”&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;Video: Exclusive: ‘Going the Distance’ Trailer&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;/a&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt;

The critically shrugged “The Runaways,” originally slated to open on March 19th has now been pushed three weeks to April 9. Update: Hold the phone. Anne Thompson explains via Apparition’s Bob Bearney. It will open in semi-limited release (220 screens in ten cities) on March 19, followed by another 1000 screens on April 9.

Edgar Wright has unveiled a shot of Jason Schwartzmann in his role as Gideon Graves in “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.” Graves is the seventh and final evil-ex boyfriend that Michael Cera’s titular Scott Pilgrim’ must defeat in order to win the hand of Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Graves’ character in the script amounts to an obnoxious, but amusing douchebag uber-hipster. [EdgarWrightHere]

Richard Linklater is set to take reigns of Miramax and Scott Rudin’s “Liars (A-E),” a rom-com about a woman who retrieves lost items from her ex-boyfriends as she is on her way to President Obama’s inauguration.

Aaron Guzikowski’s buzzed about script “The Prisoners” has been acquired by Alcon Entertainment and is being fast tracked for an autumn 2010 release through Warner Brothers. It is not known though whether the project’s former potential team of Bryan Singer at the helm and Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale as the leads are still on board as the Screendaily article notes that “discussions with potential directors and cast will start this week,” which suggests like they’re possibly staring from scratch.
