While we might automatically think of Guillermo del Toro when we conjure up thoughts of “Pacific Rim,” the franchise’s most recent filmmaker is actually Steven DeKnight, who helmed the sequel, ‘Uprising.’ And recently, on Twitter, the filmmaker opened up about his “Pacific Rim” experience and what his plans were for a possible third film in the franchise. Spoiler alert—it involved a certain skyscraper-sized lizard and his ape friend.

For years, Criterion has made a name for itself as one of the best distributors of quality films on Blu-ray and DVD. Every Criterion film has been carefully chosen, with each receiving the absolute best available audio and picture, as well as a slew of extra features. So, just knowing that Criterion is tackling the entire early “Godzilla” film collection is enough to guarantee that kaiju film fans are going to be lining up around the block (or just sitting with their internet-device of choice) to order the forthcoming “Godzilla: The Shōwa Era-Films, 1954-1975.”

Not only is it amazing that the company has chosen to cover 15 separate films for its upcoming collection, but the release marks the highly-anticipated Criterion #1000.

After plenty of speculation and buildup over the past few days, the wait is over. We’re not talking about a long-awaited release date or first footage for an anticipated movie, but rather which film would have the distinction of gracing Criterion’s so-called spine No. 1000. The answer? The kaiju king.

The Criterion Collection – the curators of classic taste for contemporary movie-watchers – announced on Thursday that the OG Godzilla himself is getting the preservation treatment this fall.

Did you know that, as of 2018, Godzilla has starred in over 30 movies? Can you imagine binge-watching over 30 Godzilla movies in a row? Major props to anyone who’s actually sat down and watched all those movies. You are officially a hero.

To be fair, it feels like Hollywood is forcing audiences to watch the same movie over and over again at times. Viewers expecting “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” to subvert the rudimentary monster movie formula and bestow audiences with an entirely fresh interpretation will more than likely find themselves sorely disappointed.

It’s that time of the year when studios take some inventory, see where they’re at with certain projects and make adjustments. Paramount Pictures is the first to make some major moves this year. The biggest news of all the release date shifts this week is the fact that “Transformers 7” (technically ‘6’ following the 5th film ‘The Last Knight’) has been pulled from the release schedule. Originally slated for a June 28, 2019 release, the untitled “Transformers” film has been yanked and that’s likely because they haven’t announced a director or screenwriters and a gigantic movie like that probably needs to start pre-production now in time to be ready for next summer.

In case you’re wondering, the franchise that Warner Bros. and Legendary are building around Godzilla and King Kong is officially called the MonsterVerse (yep, capitalized V and all) and for the next installment, they are not messing around. After getting a quick post-credits tease at the end of “Kong: Skull Island,” the rest of the classic creatures are going to come storming into the next picture.

If you’ve felt rumblings in the ground and ripples in your water glasses in the last few days, that’s because monsters are on the way. Or more accurately, they’re on an island in the Pacific, the setting for “Kong: Skull Island,” Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ thoroughly enjoyable reboot of the giant ape franchise. The film doesn’t just include the massive monkey made famous in the 1933 original, but also pits him and the human cast against a menagerie of inventive giant beasts that make up the rest of the population of the titular archipelago, as well as setting it up as part of an ongoing WB/Legendary monster universe that will eventually pit Kong against Godzilla.

When Gareth Edwards exited “Godzilla 2” earlier this year, the word on his departure was that he wanted to focus on his own smaller-scale movies once he wrapped “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Little did we know that a couple of months later, the internet would explode with rumors about the “Star Wars” spinoff, with hired guns coming in assist (or take over) the extensive reshoots ordered by Disney and Lucasfilm.

For a character who is, essentially, a big lizard, Godzilla has had remarkable staying power, going from the Hiroshima metaphor of the 1950s classic original to Gareth Edwards’ rather remarkable 2014 blockbuster reboot. The U.S. version of the character has both a sequel and a match-up with King Kong in the near future, but the deal struck with Legendary means that Toho, the producers of the original films, still have the rights to make Japanese-language movies with the character, and they did exactly that this summer.

Oh man, what is going at Warner Bros.? The studio is riding a really ugly streak at the moment, with some spectacular bombs (“Jupiter Ascending,” “Pan“), films of dubious promise (“The Legend Of  Tarzan,” and “Knights Of The Roundtable: King Arthur,” pushed from release this summer to next spring), and that’s not to mention the fragile state of their DC Comics universe, whose success seems to now be resting partly on “Suicide Squad,” but mostly on the two-part “Justice League.” And WB has made it clear in hiring Ben Affleck to serve as both Batman and executive producer on the film that they are no longer confident in Zack Snyder‘s sole vision following the critically thrashed “Batman v Superman: Dawn Of Justice.” And then there’s the “Godzilla” universe of movies, which has just lost a key figure.

It is any wonder that Warner Bros. is changing the dates of its “Godzilla” movies? “Godzilla 2,” which will see director Gareth Edwards return to the helm, was announced shortly after the inaugural film became a box-office hit in 2014 and grossed nearly $530-million worldwide. Scheduled for a 2018 release, production should have been plenty feasible — if it weren’t for the fact that Edwards, a few months earlier, had signed on for “Star Wars: Rogue One.”

Sure, the ‘Star Wars’ movie comes out December 2016, which leaves plenty of time for Edwards to produce a summer 2018 movie, right?
