And yes, we lament that one of us (Rodrigo!) wasn’t able to write a 10,000-word appreciation essay of “Strange Brew,” but such is the complex paradox that is The Playlist. And there’s always next year, eh?

As we approach July 4th weekend, it’s time for the usual: BBQs; beer; fireworks; American flags; blind patriotism; and perhaps, in some corners of the country, some kind of desperate hope that Donald Trump doesn’t destroy this country that many of us have called their adopted home.

We just got back from “Defiance” and let it be known that the film is nowhere near as bad as the early Variety review had led us all to believe, or at least strongly suggested. We’re not really fans of Edward Zwick, he hasn’t made a great film since “Courage Under Fire” in 1996 (not amazing, but very underrated) and before that the Academy Award-winning, “Glory” in 1989.

Variety called it “flat” and “unexceptionally told back in mid November, but that’s exceptionally harsh and cold.

“A potentially exceptional story is told in a flatly unexceptional manner,” writes Variety’s Todd McCarthy in his review of Edward Zwick’s upcoming WWII film, “Defiance.”

We just started reading the script and took an instant liking to it, but yeah, great stories can be easily messed up, as per McCarthy’s aforementioned opening line.

Daniel Craig, Live Schreiber and Jamie Bell play three brothers in this true WWII-set story about a group of Jews that fled into the woods of Nazi-occupied Poland in 1942, and recruited other exiles to build a village in a violent campaign of resistance.

Variety’s got the new trailer, and InContention’s got the poster for “Defiance,” the new Edward Zwick movie coming out in November starring Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber. Here’s what we wrote about the film in our Playlist Fall Preview piece.
