Night Shyamalan unveiled his gritty, realistic take on the superhero genre with “Unbreakable.” The film wasn’t a monster success at the box office, but did very well at the time, igniting fan interest in a sequel. However, a sequel didn’t come until 2017 with “Split.” And this earlier this year, Shyamalan brought the whole series to a close with the massive blockbuster “Glass.”

Night Shyamalan’s “Split” proved going back to low budget basics can regalvanize a career. “Split” was an unqualified success at the box office with a haul grossing $277 million worldwide off a $9 million dollar budget. By then it had made $100 million in those three weekends alone. Its overall domestic gross is currently close to $138 million, an all out smash for Blumhouse and Universal, which had the film budgeted at a skimp $9 million.

Boy, the career of M. Night Shyamalan has had more twists and turns than an M. Night Shyamalan movie. He went from director of a virtually unseen indie debut, to an Oscar-nominated overnight success with “The Sixth Sense,” to a golden boy unable to do wrong with “Unbreakable” and “Signs,” to a critical piñata with “Lady In The Water” and “The Happening,” to blockbuster-flop helmer (and also still a critical piñata) with “After Earth” and “The Last Airbender,” to the director of well-executed, low-budget, career-reviving horror movies.
