MTV announced the nominees for the second  MTV Movie and TV Awards (formerly the MTV Movie Awards) and after combining the two genres for the first time a year ago there were some category changes this time around.  Gone are some of the more intriguing categories such as Best Host, Next Generation, Best American Story, Best Fight Against The System, Tearjerker, Best Duo, “Trending” and Musical Moment.  Reality TV Competition is simply just Reality Series/Franchise (yes, “Franchise”) which finds “RuPaul’s Drag Race” the only “competition” show to get nominated in the new format and, sadly, Best Documentary is now just Best Music Documentary.

The Golden Globes nominations were unveiled, and as per usual, the punch was spiked as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association logged their votes. However, the this year the hooch was stronger than usual with some truly oddball nominees, and huge snubs. The latter category is where the Golden Globes raised the most eyebrows this year. The populist awards largely ignored acclaimed horror hit “Get Out,” which earned nods for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) and Best Actor, but with nothing for creator Jordan Peele.

As always, The New York Film Critics Circle took hours to determine their year-end awards for 2017. By the time it was all said and done, Greta Gerwig‘s “Lady Bird” took home two of the biggest honors, Best Picture and Best Actress for Saoirse Ronan. Both wins not only help solidify nominations in both Oscar categories, but likely put Gerwig square in the mix for a Best Director nomination as well.

While you weren’t paying attention, “Girls Trip” became the sleeper hit of the summer. The ensemble comedy starring Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith, Regina Hall, and breakout sensation Tiffany Haddish was produced on a microscopic $19 million budget, but has since earned $105 million at the domestic box office. That’s a tremendous return, and also goes to show there is a big audience out there for movies led by women and people of color.

Christopher Nolan‘s nerve-jangling WWII movie battled its way to the top of the box office this weekend with an impressive $50.5 million.

“Girls Trip” is like a fun vacation with a few minor hiccups. When reminiscing, you won’t remember that you didn’t pack enough pairs of socks, that the hotel coffee was terrible or the measly 15-minute flight delay. Those problems irk in the moment, but they don’t color your memory of the whole experience. Similarly, “Girls Trip” has its issues – its overlong two-hours-plus running time, unnecessary narration, excessive product placement, etc.

I can’t imagine the pitch meeting for “Girls Trip” was very difficult. It’s the kind of movie where a screenwriter or director could walk into a studio with the name on a concept poster and walk out with a deal, which is a long way of saying, you probably know what you’re getting into with this new red band trailer for the upcoming comedy.
