With a $45.5 million haul at the box office this weekend, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is the number one film in the country, and the Ghostbusters are back. While it remains to be seen if there will be a sequel—‘Frozen Empire’ cost $100 million, so it’ll need to make much more than “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”— fans will still have plenty of modern material to keep them happy if audiences want them.

It seems that being afraid of no ghosts can literally save your life in the fifth and latest entry in the Ghostbusters franchise, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.” The movie is a direct sequel to 2021’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” which very famously handed the series “back to the fans,”   and is helmed by Gil Kenan, co-writer of  ‘Afterlife’ and director of “Monster House,” with a script from Kenan and Jason Reitman (“Juno,” “Up in the Air”).

“Frozen Empire” catches up with the descendants of deceased original Ghostbuster, Egon Spengler, his daughter Callie Spengler (Carrie Coon, “The Leftovers,” “The Gilded Age”), and her children Trevor (Finn Wolfhard, “Stranger Things”) and Phoebe (McKenna Grace, Captain Marvel) have relocated to New York City alongside Gary Grooberson (Paul Rudd).

Jason Reitman‘s movie about the origins of “Saturday Night Live” is shaping up to be some kind of spectacle. Deadline reports that Gabriel LaBelle, Cooper Hoffman, and Rachel Sennott will star in the upcoming pic. LaBelle plays “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels, while Hoffman plays NBC exec Dick Ebersol and Sennot plays “SNL” writer Rosie Shuster.

It appears Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan have discovered they have a pretty great working relationship. Reitman directed the popular “Ghostbusters: Afterlife,” which he co-wrote with Kenan. Next, Kenan is set to direct the sequel to that film, based on a script he co-wrote with Reitman. Now, it appears Reitman’s next directorial feature is a behind-the-scenes account of the first episode of “Saturday Night Live,” and guess what?

While maybe not be the best film ever, there is a lot of love from fans for last year’s “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” The film seemed to be the prime example of a legacy sequel with nods to the original and emotional beats that tug on those nostalgic heartstrings. Can you pour so much authentic love, tenderness, and warmth into a tribute with your heart in the right place and still get it all wrong? And to that end of questions, is it possible to apply the “wrong” genre to a beloved genre franchise? Well, for the former, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” certainly makes the case for a cautionary tale about overwrought affections. Because the new film by director Jason Reitman—the son of Ivan Reitman, the director of the original 1984 comedy— is undoubtedly a well-meaning love letter to “Ghostbusters,” and the late Harold Ramis, in particular, but its well-intentioned embrace is too reverent and eventually turns mawkish, even awkward and embarrassing in the final act.

It’s a bit of a shame, given how competent ‘Afterlife’ is at certain, unexpected things.
