Oliver Stone’s ‘W,’ Lacks Shock & Awe And Or Bite…

Neither sharp satire, nor deep, or a particularly insightful (or damning) treatise on the failures of George W. Bush, Oliver Stone’s “W” is a mostly fair, but ho-hum and uneventful rendering of the 43rd United States President.

Stone might be a controversial filmmaker, but considering all we already know about Bush, “W” isn’t a particularly controversial film. It’s almost dramatized journalism and in that respect is a little dull and timid, never wanting to make too-specious of claims.

‘W’ Soundtrack Mocks The President With Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson & Gene Autry

According to the always unreliable Amazon, the “W” soundtrack comes out today (October 14; yup, it was up on Itunes on September 30, Lion’sgate Records, we need to talk). We see the film tomorrow (finally!) and we hear great things about Paul Cantelon’s score. Much like “Religuolous” use of classic-song irony, the movie and soundtrack mocks our current President with Willie Nelson’s apropos, “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” Gene Autry’s “Deep In the Heart of Texas” (remember it from “Pee Wee’s Big Adventure”??) and this one is too rich and the best: Bob Dylan’s “With God On Our Side.” Too funny.

Karl Rove Says Bush’s ‘W’ Is “Four Years Too Late”

The New York Times did a profile on Oliver Stone’s George W. Bush biopic, “W” and actually talked to one of Bush’s former advisers, the architect himself, Karl Rove.

“I don’t think they made any attempt to have this conform to any reality except that which exists in the cerebral cortex of Oliver Stone, which is a brain with only a functioning left side,” Rove told the Times recently. “This is a political film that is an attempt to influence an election that is about four years too late.”

Rove is played by actor Toby Jones (whose last starring role was as Truman Capote in “Infamous”) and his role as Bush’s snakeoil salesman in the film is tiny (which we can confirm having read the script).

Early Reviews Of ‘W’ Are About As Winning As This Administrations Current Approval Rating

Maybe Oliver Stone was right when he said he wasn’t sure whether his new film would succeed.

Depending on your perspective, early reviews for Stone’s George W. Bush biopic, “W” are either mixed and slightly better than Bush’s actual presidency (as Vulture says), or are displaying a pretty “mild buzz” as Slashfilm says. In other words. No one’s really doing backflips for the film, which is a bit sad, cause we kinda loved the satire and absurdity of the script and were/are looking forward to this (note PR has still not gotten back to us, wtf?).

USA Today has some new photos of Oliver Stone’s George W. Bush biopic, “W,” starring Josh Brolin as the decider, Elizabeth Banks as his wife, and a boatload of other big-name actors playing the Bush White House cabinet circa 2003-4 (see more photos of the whole crew here).

Stone keeps claiming the film is a comedy (“satire” are his exact words), but this comedic/satirical tone wasn’t something he was mentioning in the beginning.

Once In A Lifetime: ‘W’ Bush TV Trailer Features The Talking Heads, More Absurdist Comedy

Ok, this TV trailer for Oliver Stone’s “W” is distinctly different from the film trailer we’ve seen and really pumps up the comedy/absurdity angle. Set to the Talking Heads’s “Once In A Lifetime,” we see Josh Brolin as George W. Bush telling his mother Barbara (Ellen Burstyn) that he’s been touched by the hand of God and should run for President (much to her shock and awe) and showcases some of the friction displayed in the script between the President and VP Dick Cheney (Richard Dreyfuss), who seems to have utter contempt for his privilege and idiocy (Bush calls Guantanamo Bay, “Guantaramera,” after the famous Cuban song and Cheney corrects him with utter disdain).

Christian Bale Was Almost Bush In Oliver Stone’s ‘W’ Presidential Biopic, Director Admits Film Has Comedic Elements And Is Racing Towards Deadline

Turns out Josh Brolin wasn’t Oliver Stone’s first choice to play current Commander-in-Chief, George W. Bushbin his upcoming biopic, “W.”

Apparently, first sought after Christian Bale and spent a shit-ton of money testing out facial prosthetics so Bale would look the part, but then the “The Dark Knight” actor eventually bailed and felt he couldn’t really do the role.

“I needed a star, and Josh Brolin was not a star,” Stone told GQ in their latest issue.

It’s actually pretty much exactly how it’s written in the script and basically feels how we pictured it.

Fuck it, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. Or at least for now. We have a little bit of “W” fever these days. Yeah, we knew the Oliver Stone film would basically be an unintentional comedy from the get-go, but now we’re kind of convinced it’s going to be a fascinating, decent and at the very least, a vastly entertaining comedy since we’ve read the script.

The first shot is of cowboy younger Bush (Josh Brolin) trying to woo Laura Bush (Elizabeth Banks) and the other one is obviously one of the decider himself.

Stone once called it, a “fair, true portrait of the man,” and Josh Brolin was initially against the idea and said no to the part. “When Oliver asked me, I said, ‘Are you crazy? Access Hollywood has gotten their hands on some footage of Josh Brolin as the decider, the Commander-In-Chief, Dubya himself in Oliver Stone’s biopic ‘W.’ As funny as it all seems on the surface and from the trailers, Brolin seems to have nailed George W. Bush’s cadence and mannerisms; it’s quite uncanny, but Brolin didn’t have a stellar year in 2007 just to squander it.

We’ve been on a script reading tear of late and we just finished ‘W’ two nights ago.

HBO Fresh Out Of Ideas, Taps Trent Reznor’s ‘Year Zero’

Nine Inch Nails front man Trent Reznor is in talks with HBO to develop his alternate-reality game which he created to accompany his 2007 album, “Year Zero.” The game/album picks up in a dystopian 2022 America where George W. Bush has instated himself as a dictator, controls the masses via a tainted water supply and wages war on subversives.

In a recent interview with the L.A. Times, Reznor declared the possibility for a series is looking good, “I just pitched to HBO two weeks ago in L.A.

Oliver Stone’s eagerly anticipated (at least for comedy/irony enthusiasts) George W. Bush biopic “W” has itself a teaser trailer. Apparently this thing was supposed to be saved for “Access Hollywood” tonight, but clearly that plan has gone awry. The trailer mostly focuses on the younger partying frat-boy Bush (Josh Brolin) and his heated relationship with his dad George Bush Sr. (George Cromwell) (“Who do you think you are?” Cromwell sneers after running down a list of all the jobs and careers handed to him that one by one he botched).

You’ll remember that shortly after it was announced, a few pages from Oliver Stone’s “W” script leaked to the Hollywood Reporter, and everyone had a good laugh at how silly it was and how much it actually resembled a true comedy; we particularly liked the “turdblossom,” line that Bush delivers to Rove, on page one no less.

Well, AwardsDaily has gotten their hands on what is allegedly the final script and they say it’s worse than you could possibly imagine and they claim, “that the groaners we saw two months ago were the good parts.”

[Billboard]

The Abel Ferrara documentary about the infamous Chelsea Hotel, in New York, “Chelsea On The Rocks” will have a score by G.E.

Critical punching bag, German director Uwe Boll doesn’t know when to keep his mouth shut. The most-hated director alive has had the gall to make poor adaptations of seminal video games like, “BloodRayne” and now he dares to claim he would be the perfect director for “Grand Theft Auto IV,” a move seemingly calculated to get Internet nerds into an even bigger lather.

“I think I would actually be the right guy to do [GTA4], because my movies are all bloody and violent and I don’t have a problem with action scenes,” Boll told Vulture (who are well aware that an interview with Boll is like money [hits] in the bank).

Oliver Stone’s Bush ‘W’ Movie Will Completely Be Done and Ready For An October 17 Release??

Maybe Oliver Stone’s George W. Bush biopic, “W” will be a comedy! This might explain why Lionsgate is deciding to release the film on October 17 – just three weeks before the November 4 elections even though not an inch of film has been shot yet.

Filming begins May 12, which basically gives them five months to shoot, edit and finish the film in time for mid-October. Uhh, rush much? And casting for the remaining members of Bush’s collusion cabinet haven’t even been announced yet!

Who Else Will Star In Oliver Stone’s White House Comedy Drama, “W.”?

Not only has sensationalist director Oliver Stone not made a good film in about 17 years (“JFK”), but many of the pictures he has made in that time have been the most wretched, insipid pieces of laughable cinema in recent memory (“Natural Born Killers,” “Alexander”; though “Any Given Sunday,” did have some good unintentional comedy to it).

In keeping with this trend, you’ve obviously heard that Stone is planning on rush-releasing, “W.,” a biopic about the Bush administration this year, and as quickly as he can before Dubya goes out of office in November to capitalize on whatever residual apathetic hatred the country has for him.
