Not only is his work an example of quality filmmaking and storytelling, but he pushed the horror genre into new territory, bridging the gap between the ‘50s horror icons like the Universal Monsters and the more modern, politically charged thrillers of the ‘70s and ‘80s. But between the work done on two iconic horror films, “Night of the Living Dead” and “Dawn of the Dead,” Romero actually shot a feature, “Amusement Park,” that has never been released.

We were happy with the idea of potentially getting some new Romero awesomeness. But it appears what we should have been more excited about is the 1973 film “The Amusement Park.”

Over the weekend, Daniel Kraus, the author who has collaborated with Guillermo del Toro on novelizations of the director’s work, such as “The Shape of Water,” went to Twitter to rave about a copy of the unreleased Romero-directed film “The Amusement Park.” And according to the author, not only is “The Amusement Park” good, it’s a “revelation”

“With the exception of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD—maybe—THE AMUSEMENT PARK is Romero’s most overtly horrifying film.

George Romero’s zombie film from 50 years ago not only was scary, introducing the definitive take on the living dead rising from their graves, but the film also showed the perfect marriage of horror and social commentary. This film was followed up by two other Romero classics (“Day of the Dead” is severely underrated) that created one of the best trilogies in horror history.

This is what it’s come to, people: the son of a shark-like studio executive directing a comic book adaptation mashing together two classic characters of literature and history who would never really cross paths. Probably in 3D. It’s Breck Eisner, and it’s “Blood of the Innocent.”

“Blood of the Innocent” is a 1985 graphic novel (i.e. serious person comics without superheroes) where Dracula faces off against Jack the Ripper. We spent fifteen seconds Googling for a better synopsis before we said “fuck it” and set our stack of original screenplays afire.

George A. Romero is the godfather of zombies. Since his immortal 1968 debut feature “Night of the Living Dead,” which was the first film to portray the living dead as something other than a voodoo hex (instantly making it way less racist than any zombie movie that came before it), the filmmaker been chronicling the undead. He made a series of direct sequels (including “Dawn of the Dead,” arguably the greatest zombie shocker) and then decided to start over.

It’s hard to not want George Romero to succeed. “Night of the Living Dead” was a masterpiece, and while “Dawn of the Dead” had silly music and “Day of the Dead” had an obscene amount of over-acting, both were actually pretty well put together and were effective critiques of society (particularly “Dawn…”). But after fans hit the snooze button during “Land of the Dead” and “Diary of the Dead,” has all really been lost for the horror vet?

Brass balls, Breck Eisner. Brass balls. After tempting fate with a gargantuan failure of a debut in “Sahara,” a movie that lost tens of millions and resulted in an extremely nasty lawsuit, Eisner, son of Michael, dared to take on George A. Romero’s counterculture thriller “The Crazies.” After turning the liberal politics of that picture into apathetic modern day libertarianism, he’s prepared to take on another product of its time, John Carpenter’s “Escape From New York.”

The “Escape” remake has been bouncing around for awhile now with esteemed names like Len Wiseman, Brett Ratner, Johnathan Mostow, Gerard Butler and Josh Brolin attached, though it seems to have gained momentum recently when original director John Carpenter signed off on the redo as a credited producer, putting his name to a contract stipulating the film’s protagonist Snake Plissken must “always be a badass” among other specific requests in keeping with the source material.

With just a couple of modest releases going wide this weekend, Scorsese’s “Shutter Island” should probably still reign supreme. Though Warner Bros. is marketing the shit out of “Cop Out” and middle America does love Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan.

In Wide Release: Frequent Flyer Kevin Smith marks his first time directing a script he did not write with this week’s “Cop Out.” The genuinely insane Tracy Morgan stars alongside genuinely bored Bruce Willis as two, you guessed it, cops on the trail of a baseball-card obsessed gangster.

If you’re going to make a horror movie called “The Crazies,” you’d better go big or go home. Unfortunately for director Breck Eisner, helming his first film since the abysmal “Sahara” way back in 2005, he seems to be blissfully unaware that anyone could come into this film with any sort of expectations.

And maybe he’s not wrong. After all, the film is a remake of a minor George Romero film from the ’70s and as far as the concept goes it’s all pretty standard fare nowadays.
