Romero’s widow, Suzanne Romero, was in development on a new sequel in the “Night of the Living Dead” franchise that her husband spearheaded before his passing. Well, it appears that the past two years have been very fruitful and the Romero estate is ready to begin production on “Twilight of the Dead.”

Romero‘s 1968 masterpiece “Night Of The Living Dead” is one of the best horror movies ever. Romero‘s 1968 zombie film “Night Of The Living Dead.” And there are so many reasons to love it. For one, the movie is low-budget filmmaking to the max: shot in Pittsburgh for only $118,000 by a group of industry renegades who were tired of shooting commercials. Then there are Romero’s several masterstrokes: casting an African American as one of the leads; using a schlocky, violent premise to examine culturally relevant themes; ingenious on-location shooting.

Most of the time, these sequels are studio-driven cash-grabs that fail to live up to the original film and quickly dash the hopes of eager fans. But sometimes, just sometimes, a sequel to a horror hit is great. And on this episode of The Playlist Podcast, a George A. Romero classic, an iconic slasher, and maybe Sam Raimi’s most ridiculous film are all discussed as some of the best horror sequels of all time.

Romero and asked him to make a film about elder abuse and ageism. The director really only had “Night of the Living Dead” under his belt at this point in his career—“The Crazies” would be released later that year, and “Martin” and “Dawn of the Dead” were still five years away—and so when the finished product didn’t satisfy those who had commissioned it, “The Amusement Park” was shelved for almost five decades.

Not only is his work an example of quality filmmaking and storytelling, but he pushed the horror genre into new territory, bridging the gap between the ‘50s horror icons like the Universal Monsters and the more modern, politically charged thrillers of the ‘70s and ‘80s. But between the work done on two iconic horror films, “Night of the Living Dead” and “Dawn of the Dead,” Romero actually shot a feature, “Amusement Park,” that has never been released.

Romero is revered in the realm of horror. He’s the filmmaker who single-handedly created what modern audiences know as the zombie film. And through his works such as “Dawn of the Dead” and “Night of the Living Dead,” Romero devised the blueprint for adding social commentary to a genre that is mainly known for its frights. With the filmmaker’s passing in 2017, it was believed that fans had seen the last new work from Romero.

The first installment of any horror movie, the ones crystallized into the canon as classic anyhow, is often like a wonderful honeymoon where everything is new and rosy. But as the marriage goes on and the bloom falls of the rose, horror movies can yield some seriously painful diminishing returns that can mar a franchise.

Responsible for the creation of the modern movie zombie, a genre staple that has lasted decades and continues to be a beloved horror conceit, Romero may have been copied but few ever beat the original.
