If Cannes has come to an end that means a slew of summer festivals is about to pop up around the globe. New York will see the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival debut next week while the 2024 Annecy International Animation Festival begins on June 9. At the end of the month, one of Europe’s longest-running tier A1 festivals, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, will return for its 58th edition. This morning, KVIFF revealed a majority of its world premiere and competition slate and it includes new films from Mark Cousins, Oleh Sentsov, Moaz Deshe, and others.

The 56th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has come to an end after over a week of cinematic delights. At the closing night ceremony, The KVIFF President’s Award was presented to both Czech actor Bolek Polívka and Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro, with the Crystal Globe for outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema was presented to Geoffrey Rush.

Before the closing ceremony, the non-statutory awards were announced, where two Czech films, the drama “Borders of Love” and the documentary “Art Talent Show,” were honored by the journalistic FIPRESCI jury at the 56th KVIFF.

The 56th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is right around the corner, and today the festival announced its two honorary awards for 2022. In something of a surprise, KVIFF will bestow the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema presented to Geoffrey Rush. The KVIFF President’s Award will be given to Benicio del Toro. Both gentlemen will receive their awards during the festival’s closing ceremony on July 9.

A good biopic has to come from a variety of areas. First, the subject has to be interesting enough to warrant a feature film. Then you definitely need a quality filmmaker to bring it to life. And finally, the cast really should be solid, otherwise the filmmaking and subject are all for naught. (Now, that I think about it, this is true of all films, but I digress.) All that to say, the cast and crew for the new film, “Raised Eyebrows,” sure does tick a lot of those boxes.

Written and directed by Stanley Tucci, and co-starring Geoffrey Rush, Clémence Poésy, Tony Shalhoub and Sylvie Testud, the film tells the true story of the relationship between James Lord and the painter Alberto Giacometti.

Starring Geoffrey Rush, Armie Hammer, Clémence Poésy, Tony Shalhoub and Sylvie Testud, and directed by Stanley Tucci, the film is “a charming, modest” look at the unique artistic process of painter Alberto Giacometti, as he hits down to compose a portrait of art-lover James Lord.

An expensive, over-the-top “adaptation” of a theme park ride, Jerry Bruckheimer’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” seemed all but doomed to fail in 2003. The knives were out, the critics were skeptical, and the idea of story cobbled out of kiddie ride seemed preposterous. Astonishingly, and against all odds, director Gore Verbinski invigorated the often-dismissed pirate genre, with a cavalier spirit and rollicking, cartoonish exuberance. Add the surprisingly inspired performance by Johnny Depp as the almost immediately iconic Jack Sparrow and the result was swashbuckling entertainment with a capital E.
