The world premiere of “The Boy And The Heron” at TIFF last month marked the first film from Hayao Miyazaki in a decade. And as it’s made its tour on the Fall festival circuit, it’s clear Miyazaki has another winner on his hands. Now Deadline reports that Gkids, the distributor for the film, will release Japanese and English-language editions of Miyazaki’s latest in US theaters this December; and the English voice cast is quite the ensemble.

A familiar mélange and pastiche of sci-fi-tropes you’ve seen and felt before, filmmaker Gareth Edwards’ science-fiction drama, “The Creator,” is recognizable but, nonetheless, largely compelling— skillfully understanding the crucial balance of blockbuster scale and grounding character intimacy. Its intriguing examination of what constitutes a sentient being—coupled with its aesthetic mix of lo-fi, gritty, and grimy tech blended with sleeker, cleaner, and austerely traditional visual references to the future— makes for an engaging experience clearly designed for the big screen.

You may recall many moons ago, “Anomalisa” animator and Oscar-nominated filmmaker Duke Johnson—he co-directed the film with writer/director Charlie Kaufman—had a new live-action film in the works called “The Actor.” The film was to star Ryan Gosling, who was also producing; it was a big screen take on Donald E. Westlake’s novel “Memory.”

The broad and common critique of Marvel movies, generally, is that they are often anonymously made, cookie-cutter in shape, and—if created by an indie auteur—set up in a way that generally strips that filmmaker of their voice or any discerning identity. In some regards, Chloé Zhao’s “Eternals” seems engineered as an exact rejoinder to this criticism. If Marvel is generally boxing in their filmmakers (so some claim anyhow), then they’ve allowed Zhao, an Oscar winner for this year’s “Nomadland,” to do whatever she wants.

When it debuted at the 2018 Berlin Film Festival, critics were raving about the horror-thriller, “Luz.” Apparently, the folks at NEON were particularly impressed, as the studio has announced a new horror film, “Cuckoo,” from “Luz” filmmaker, Tilman Singer. And it appears the studio has already lined up one hell of a cast for the film.

Now, Variety reports that Chan is being tapped to play a role in Marvel’s cosmic immortal’s movie, “Eternals.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences started off the month by inviting 842 new members into the mix. Assuming they all agree to join, which is never the case, this swells the membership to almost 9,000 members. This year’s class also helps AMPAS come closer to many of the diversity goals it has strived for since the #OscarsSoWhite controversy in 2016.

Playing a blue-skinned alien probably means a lot of time in the makeup chair, but if you ask Gemma Chan that wasn’t the toughest part of transforming into Kree soldier Minn-Erva in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s “Captain Marvel.”  It turns out those skin-tight costumes are less comfortable than they look.

“I found out I was playing the part about three months before we started and they said you should just you should train because you need to be strong enough to wear the suit because it’s pretty hard to move around in,” Chan says.
