The actor has starred in several of them, 2008’s “Appaloosa,” 2004’s “Hidalgo,” and even more recent arthouse international films like “Jauja” and “Far from Men” employ elements of this genre. Mortensen has also moved into writing and directing features in recent years, following the critically-acclaimed “Falling,” and so his next directorial effort, “The Dead Don’t Hurt,” is also returning to the dangerous Western frontier.

And maybe just zombie ones. Snyder’s best movie since his debut, the zombie film “Dawn Of The Dead” (2004), “Army Of The Dead” is really compelling and deftly navigates a lot of different tones, even if it quickly leaves more interesting ones behind.

It’s an enticing mash-up that raises the stakes to the risks and rewards inherent in both genres. That’s the premise of Zack Snyder‘s latest film, “Army Of The Dead,” set to hit Netflix this May.

“It is a full-blown, balls-to-the-wall zombie heist movie, so it’s genre-on-genre in a great way,” Snyder recently told EW.

While it doesn’t sound like the most original plot, Grillo is always a welcome presence and the film will be, at the very least, action packed. The official synopsis reads:

Frank Grillo (Kingdom, Captain America: Civil War) stars as the wheelman, a getaway driver thrust into a high stakes race-to-survive after a bank robbery goes terribly wrong.

If Robert Redford’s “The Conspirator” was the strident and overbearing example of how to draw links between events of the past to issues of today, John Sayles’ “Amigo” is the antidote. Using the tail-end of the American-Phillipine war as a backdrop, Sayles does what Redford can’t. Forgoing character lessons, big speeches and a single-minded tack, Sayles’ film is a complex and organically built work that coaxes meaning out of the situations it builds rather than putting the politics first and constructing a story around it.

John Sayles heads to TIFF this year with a new film under his arm, “Amigo,” his first since 2007’s “Honeydripper.”

As previously reported, the film is a fictionalized account of the Philippines-American War at the turn of the century. The film apparently grew out of his years-in-the-making, 1000 page novel “Some Time In The Sun” that unfortunately didn’t find a publisher. While the book, which ironically started out as a screenplay, didn’t manage to get printed, it did help raise finances for the film.

Darkness comes in many flavors. If you’ve heard anything about Michael Winterbottom’s “The Killer Inside Me,” it’s inevitable that you’ve read at least something about its supposed darkness and brutal violence. The Casey Affleck starring neonoir certainly does deliver in darkness of several types as well as many other moods. While Winterbottom’s ‘Killer’ can be rough around the edges at times, he has made a film that, like it or not, will certainly stick with you for days after you see it.

We’re fans of John Sayles here at the Playlist and while his recent output has been a little spotty, the director’s fiercely independent spirit and unique cinematic voice always make him one to keep an eye on.

Since the release of 2007’s “Honeydripper” Sayles has gone quiet, popping up in a couple of small film roles and taking a writing credit on “The Spiderwick Chronicles.” But it appears the director was getting the pieces in place for his next film, “Baryo,” a fictionalized account of Philippines-American War at the turn of the century.

— Coming Soon reported this a few days back, but Variety have today confirmed the news that “Precious” director Lee Daniels will direct a screen version of the musical “Miss Saigon,” for Cameron Mackintosh and Tom Cruise’s former producing partner Paula Wagner. Frankly, we’re dreading this: the stage show, from “Les Miserables” creators Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil is a glib, sentimental retelling of “Madame Butterfly,” that’s basically an excuse to make a helicopter turn up on stage, and it seems to play to director Daniels’ worst instincts.

As we noted last week in a piece that suggests Dimension films might be trying to fuck with tweak the trailer, Esquire’s Tom Chiarella has seen the John Hillcoat directed adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s long-delayed, “The Road.”

It’s only one man’s opinion obviously, but the Esquire scribe calls the film, “the most important film of the year” (or at least that’s the headline of the piece; sadly, it’s not online yet), and more importantly that’s gloriously high plaudits for a film that previously received mediocre, test-screening audience thoughts and then was delayed, and then pushed back almost a year (all of which did not bode well).
