Will Tom Cruise, Will Smith & Anna Kendrick Star In The Rodeo Drama, ‘Paper Wings’?

Could Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Anna Kendrick and several other character actors join the rodeo romance drama, “Paper Wings”?

According to Access and the NY Post (who thought it was a Scientology meeting), the stars, including actors Chad Michael Murray, Eric Dane, Tate Donovan, Tom Skerritt, Tom Arnold, Johnny Galecki, and Jenna Elfman, all convened for a table reading on the project.

Last we heard, Gabrielle Muccino (he directed Will Smith in “The Pursuit of Happyness” and “Seven Pounds,” the former of which garnered the actors an Academy Award nomination) was just one of the directors in talks, but with Will Smith actually at the table reading, this is a pretty good sign that Muccino is onboard.

Last year, producer Emmanuel Benbihy revealed that follow up anthology projects to “Paris Je T’Aime” and “New York, I Love You,” set in Shanghai, Rio de Janiero and Jerusalem, were already in the works. And indeed they still are. Currently walking the Cannes marketplace looking for buyers, reps for WestEnd Films, who have the worldwide rights to the project, have announced an impressive slate of directors for the upcoming films.

First up, and set to start shooting in October, is “Shanghai, I Love You” with Jim Sheridan, Lu Chuan (“Kekexili: Mountain Patrol”) and Gabriele Muccino (“Seven Pounds”) among the first of the confirmed directors.

Tom Cruise And Reese Witherspoon Set To Team For Country-Western Rodeo Romance ‘Paper Wings’

Country and western culture seem to be the flavor of the week after the success “Crazy Heart” with Tom Cruise and Reese Witherspoon now eyeing a team up in “Paper Wings,” a romance film set in the world of rodeos according to the L.A. Times.

The film will follow a rodeo champion (Cruise) who falls in love with an up-and-coming country singer, to be played Witherspoon. While such a role will be a first of its kind for Cruise, Witherspoon will be treading similar ground after her award-wining role as June Carter in James Mangold’s Johnny Cash biopic “Walk The Line.” She also has the sure-fire feminist hit “The Pioneer Woman” being developed by Sony which follows a woman’s journey from spoilt city girl to domestic ranch wife.

Italian director Gabriele Muccino broke through in 2001 with the decidedly mediocre “L’ultimo bacio,” which was remade into the Zach Braff vehicle “The Last Kiss,” which is even worse. He went on to become Will Smith’s go-to-guy for sentimental dramas, helming the very average “The Pursuit of Happyness,” and the abysmal “Seven Pounds,” the latter of which will only stand in the annals of cinema for introducing the world’s most ridiculous method of committing suicide.

Will Smith’s ‘Seven Pounds’ Roasted In Early Reviews

The embargo on “Seven Pounds” has been finally broken. Reviews have hit from Variety, the Village Voice and Timeout New York (who incidentally don’t get enough love) and the prognosis is not good.

Variety: “Given Emily’s (Rosario Dawson) vulnerability, Ben’s (Will Smith) gentle patience with her, Smith’s and Dawson’s attractiveness, the lushly intimate widescreen images devised by [Gabriele] Muccino and lenser Philippe Le Sourd, and Angelo Milli’s literally incessant button-pushing score, “Seven Pounds” offers either seductive emotional appeal or indigestible mawkishness, according to taste.”

Like us, the Village Voice greatly respected Muccino’s “The Pursuit of Happyness,” but they write: “Writing at the time, I praised the film for Smith’s superb performance and for its willingness to honestly address the social and economic realities of America’s underclass.

On Monday we briefly mentioned that the New York Post’s Lou Lumenick spoiled the surprise ending of Gabriele Muccino’s “Seven Pounds” starring Will Smith.

We didn’t read it because we didn’t want it spoiled for us, but having now seen it, yes, we can confirm that it’s pretty spoiler-ish and you shouldn’t read it if you want to enjoy the film fully (though to be fair, the idea is suggested right off the bat).

Two New York Post Reviews Split on ‘Seven Pounds’

Why are we so intrigued with “Seven Pounds”? Mostly because figuring out the “mystery” to it. Some say its easy to figure out during the trailer, but we haven’t really thought about it that hard. We see the film tomorrow and we want to be surprised for once (since we’ve mostly read the scripts for a big chunk of the Oscar bait in advance this year).

Kyle Smith calls the Will Smith starring vehicle, the “third-best movie of ’08.”

Smith’s NY Post-colleague Lou Lumenick, says the film, “should be more accurately titled “Seven Hundred Pounds of Schmaltz” (and warning apparently they’re are big spoilers in his review and we’re not reading them).

Trailers and scenes from “Seven Pounds” staring Will Smith and Rosario Dawson are on Apple trailers. The scenes are new, but the trailer doesn’t look much different from the one the leaked a few months ago. Either way, the “mystery” behind this film continues as no one seems to know what it’s really about other than they synopsis that is out there which basically suggests a dying man who wishes seven wishes or acts of kindness to seven strangers.

Will Smith And Rosario Dawson Talk The “Mystery” Of ‘Seven Pounds On Oprah; Dawson Inadvertently Disses M. Night Shyamalan

Considering there’s not a ton of info about “Seven Pounds” out there (and digging deeper here it seems very much on purpose), this interview with Rosario Dawson and Will Smith on Oprah is pretty informative. It sounds like there’s a twist ending in the film, but one that’s genuine and not surprising. In fact, Dawson inadvertently gives in a dig at M. Night Shyamalan, when discussing the twist and the “mystery” of the film.

The actress said midway through the story she was weeping while reading, and completely engaged, but not sure where the story was going.

The trailer for “Seven Pounds” went up a few weeks ago around TIFF, but was unceremoniously yanked down from the web almost immediately. It’s back up. Director Gabriele Muccino reteams with Will Smith (from the actually quite good “The Pursuit of Happyness “) who stars as a suicidal IRS agent in an emotional story of a man who “seeks redemption by changing the lives of seven strangers.” Rosario Dawson plays his love interest suffering from a heart condition and Woody Harrelson portrays a blind pianist.
