The legend of David Bowie seems to grow with each new inspection of the man. “Stardust” adds yet another glimpse into the myths that surround this icon. Contrasting much of the interpretations about an established performer, the account of his rise to stardom speculates on a young singer desperate to find his place in a world perpetually looking for the next big thing.

Unlike other recent musical biopics, “Stardust” leaves the famous songs on the sidelines.

Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, The Thin White Duke – at his height, David Bowie burned through identities like cigarettes, showcasing his wild theatricality and huge range of interests. “Stardust” is a fictionalized portrayal of Bowie just before he decides to don those masks, when his eclecticism is a hurdle, not an asset and writer/director Gabriel Range has as much to say about the artistic process and growing from failure as he does about Bowie specifically.

Films about rock legends are a hot commodity in recent years. Thanks to the success of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Rocketman,” studios love the idea of presenting stories of some of the biggest icons in music featuring some of the biggest songs in their catalog. But things are a bit different with the upcoming film, “Stardust.”
