Sigh… what happened to the Hughes Brothers. They had such a promising career and took Hollywood by storm with their arresting first feature about gang life in L.A., “Menace II Society” (which still outclasses “Boyz In Da Hood” til this day). Their follow-up, the crime film, “Dead Presidents” wasn’t as successful, but it was still an interesting look at the black experience in the United States with interesting visuals and generally free of the didactic tone Spike Lee can sometime use (and turn off viewers with).

Trailer: ‘The Book Of Eli’ – Is This Officially The End Of The Hughes Brothers?

The Hughes Brothers (“Menace II Society”) finally return after an almost nine-year absence with “The Book Of Eli,” starring Denzel Washington and Mila Kunis (and Tom Waits). What an odd pairing, huh? Their last feature-length film was 2001’s highly dubious, “From Hell,” starring Johnny Depp and adapted from an Alan Moore comic (essentially another retelling of the Jack The Ripper murders).

Coincidentally, a not entirely script review on Script Shadow was taken down today by Warner Bros.

Tom Waits To Appear With Denzel Washington In The Post-Apocalyptic Western, ‘The Book Of Eli’

We haven’t really stayed up on “The Book of Eli” by the Hughes Brothers, Allen and Albert (“Menace II Society,” and “Dead Presidents”), for whatever reason aside from its initial announcement starring Denzel Washington, and the fact that Gary Oldman had joined the cast (it could because it’s a post apocalyptic film, potentially not in our wheel house, and the Hughes Brothers haven’t made a good film in a while — or any film for that matter.

Denzel Washington And The Hughes Brothers Team-Up For Post-Apocalyptic Drama ‘Eli’

Remember the Hughes Brothers, Allen and Albert? They barely remember themselves. The twin-brother filmmaking duo hit Hollywood with an extremely auspicious start directing urban classics like, “Menace II Society,” and “Dead Presidents,” before getting sidetracked with documentaries that were good, but came and went (“American Pimp”) and unfortunate choices far from their wheelhouse (the adaptation of Alan Moore’s Jack the Ripper story, “From Hell”).

Though Allen recently directed an vignette in the short stories film, “New York, I Love You,” the duo haven’t made a feature length film since 2001 (the accurately rebuked ‘Hell’).
