No U.S. Theatrical Release: Sci-Fi Film ‘Franklyn’ Limps Onto DVD Tomorrow

Do we all remember “Franklyn,” the dystopian sci-fi thriller starring Eva Green, Ryan Phillippe, Sam Riley and directed by Gerald McMorrow?

Last year, many film sites — including us — wondered when the hell this U.K. film (which was already released there earlier this year) would ever get released in the U.S.

Well, it’s out alright. Quietly dumped onto DVD this week (comes out tomorrow November 17), with almost zero promotion (the only reason we knew is cause it was out early at our local video store).

Writer-director Gerald McMorrow’s sci-fi thriller “Franklyn,” has been recently release in the U.K. but still has failed to find a U.S. distributor. Perhaps it’s because no one seems to know what the confounding film, dubbed the “British Bladerunner,” is actually about (not even the cast and crew seem to agree what it’s about).

Is ‘Franklyn’ Even Too Confusing For Cast And Crew?

Writer-director Gerald McMorrow’s sci-fi thriller “Franklyn,” which has recently been released in the U.K. but seeks an American distributor, has been confounding audiences since debuting at worldwide film festivals. This article from the TimesOnline both confirms confusion from cast and crew over what the film’s really about, but it also showcases a certain sensibility that will surely connect with fans of “cult cinema.”

Dubbed the, “British Blade Runner,” producer Jeremy Thomas (“Sexy Beast”) calls the film, “Genre-busting, genre bending and genre breaking.

More 2009: The Potentially Decent Escapist Entertainment Films of ’09

Ok, we’re not total snobs (just part snobs) so here’s a list of what Could Be Potentially Great Escapist Entertainment/but Could Also Be Terrible. You could even consider some of this Part 2 to our Most Anticipated of 2009 piece, but our positive feelings about all these films are couched and tentative and we reserve the right to disavow any of these “movies” in the 50/50 case that they suck hard. Again, if they do shit the bed, blame it on “Iron Man,” “The Dark Knight” and “X-Men 2” for raising the bar in these genres (a least the dork ones).

Gerald McMorrow’s dystopian and dark “Franklyn” stars Ryan Phillippe, Eva Green, Sam Riley and Bernard Hill, but is there something terribly wrong with it? As Jeffrey Wells says, ” ‘Franklyn’ was a possible Cannes ’08 entry, but nope. Then I was thought it might turn up at last September’s Toronto Film Festival…sorry. Then I thought it might appear at Sundance ’09….no-go. And now it’s opening in the U.K. next month with no U.S. release date in sight.
