We are lucky to be in a world where LGBTQ+ filmmakers and stories have a wide-reaching spotlight. From dramas to genre films, representation is wonderful. Sometimes, however, it is good to remember before this golden era and honor the masters of the past who pushed boundaries to get us where we are. A notable gay filmmaker of the 20th century is German filmmaker Rainer Werner Fassbinder, a writer, director, and actor who lived a short life but left an integral impact and helped spawn the German ’70s new wave scene that also launched filmmakers like Wim Wenders and Werner Herzog.

‘Summer of ’85’: François Ozon’s Young Romance is Best At Its Sunniest [TIFF Review]

“Don’t take me for a psycho,” Alexis, the protagonist of François Ozon’s “Summer of ’85,” explains in the film’s opening voice-over. “Corpses are not my thing… Corpses are not my thing. They have a terrible effect on me. Actually, one corpse had a terrible effect on me.” Yet at the conclusion of that pitch-black opening, which is written and framed like a murderer’s confession, Ozon slams into upbeat New Wave music and beautiful bodies on a sunny beach, a single cut that summarizes the style (and, perhaps, the biggest flaw) of the French filmmaker’s latest.

Since 2000, you’d be hard-pressed to find a filmmaker that has received as much acclaim internationally than French filmmaker François Ozon. With numerous films released over the past 20 years that have received awards recognition, festival accolades, and critical acclaim, Ozon has made a name for himself as a filmmaker that just doesn’t release bad works. And this year, he hopes to keep that trend going with the upcoming film, “Ete 85.”

And though there’s no official release date yet, it appears that the marketing for “Ete 85” has begun with a new teaser for the feature film.

Even though we still are dealing with the post-fall film festival hangover, it’s time to start looking ahead to 2019. We’ve already seen the year’s first major festival, Sundance, reveal most of its lineup, and now, the Berlin International Film Festival has followed suit. However, instead of releasing its full selection of films, we’re only getting a taste of what’s to come. But judging by what the festival is revealing already, 2019 is sure to be another strong year for Berlin.

French filmmaker Francois Ozon likes to keep his audience on their toes, and his last three pictures are a good example of how he likes to switch things up each time around. 2012’s comedy/mystery “In The House” was followed by 2013’s provocative erotic drama “Young & Beautiful,” and 2014’s “The New Girlfriend” was a transgender melodrama. And now comes “Frantz” which sees Ozon shifting gears and going black-and-white for this WWI tale.

With the film industry-at-large firmly focused on the Great White North and the first festival of the fall season– the Toronto International Film Festival– thoughts drift to new trailers and one-sheets coming out from those highly anticipated awards-seeking heavy hitters, not on the dismal pickins at the multiplex this weekend. Maybe TIFF weekend will become like the Februaries and Augusts of years past… a dumping ground for subpar movies. We suggest you check out “The American” (which we kind of loved) or “Machete” from last weekend (which, well, some of us loved…), or spend the weekend glued to your computer, constantly refreshing TrailerAddict.

Review: Francois Ozon’s ‘Hideaway’ Features a Raw Performance from Isabelle Carré

François Ozon has two modes: quietly restrained (“5×2,” “Time to Leave”) and gleefully unhinged (“8 Women,” “Criminal Lovers”). Like most of his more recent work, his latest film, “Hideaway” (more appropriately titled “Le refuge” in French), lies sadly in the former category, focusing on a drug-addicted woman and her pregnancy in the wake of the baby’s father’s death. He’s better (and far more interesting) when there’s crime involved or other outrageous acts (“Swimming Pool” and “Sitcom”), but when he dwells in the mundane, his films veer toward boring.

After the mostly miserable cinematic year we’ve had so far, we’re looking forward to film festival season more than ever. The first 50 films for Toronto were announced a few days ago, and now September’s 67th Venice Film Festival has unveiled its full competition line-up, joining Darren Aronofsky’s “Black Swan” and Julie Taymor’s “The Tempest,” which will open and close the festival respectively (although Taymor’s film isn’t in contention for awards), and Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete,” which will receive an out-of-competition midnight screening.

Quentin Tarantino To Lead Venice Film Festival Jury; Coppola’s ‘Somewhere,’ Schnabel’s ‘Miral’ & More Expected To Appear

With Cannes kicking off the international film festival season next week, the Venice Film Festival organizers are beginning to put the pieces in place for their big event, which will run from September 1-11, overlapping the Toronto Film Festival, which will kick off September 9th.

The big news revealed today is that Quentin Tarantino has been selected to head the jury for the in competition films. While none of Tarantino’s films have ever played at Venice, he has worked with the festival before overseeing the Italian Kings of the B’s and Spaghetti Westerns sidebars in 2004 and 2007.

2010 Cannes: Surprises & Snubs In The Official Lineup

So the almost complete official lineup for the 63rd Cannes Film Festival arrived earlier this morning. As always, the list was exciting and surprising both for what was included and what didn’t make the prestigious festival that is the unofficial kick off for the upcoming year of films. This year, in a mad dash to watch all the films that were submitted and in order to give a few films more time to finish up (*ahem* “Tree Of Life”), the Cannes organizers have left five slots on their traditionally 20 strong In Competition programming open, so some of the films below may end up getting slotted in the upcoming weeks.

Do We Need A Soundtrack Moratorium On Cat Power In Film?

Are filmmakers and music supervisors getting lazy, do they have similar taste and or are they just reacting to a certain kind of collective hivethink?

One of our film critic friends from France has aired a grievance with us and we think he’s onto something, so we figured we’d vocalize it for him. He keeps pointing to some recent uncreative soundtrack recidivism, namely the constant/overuse of Cat Power in recent films.

We love the kooky Chan Marshall and so does everyone else.
