The Playlist Rates The NYTimes ‘5 Breakthrough Actors’ Piece AKA Alison Pill Wasn’t That Good In ‘Milk’

We have yet to finish our annual “Breakthrough actors of the year piece,” we’re considering holding out until the year is done, but the NYTimes having already seen many of the big winter films of the year have already done there feature.

They laud performances by Freddy Rodriguez in the upcoming Latinos-like-Christmas too film, “Nothing Like the Holidays” (sure, we’ll take you’re word for it, we haven’t seen it, but the trailer is cliche gift-wrap), Alexa Davalos in “Defiance” (hmm, no clue, but we’re greatly looking forward to the Ed Zwick WWII film), François Bégaudeau of “The Class” (we’re totally with them here, he’s a marvel, the film is an A-grader) and Michael Shannon of Sam Mendes’ “Revolutionary Road” with Leo and Kate (InContention called this months ago, so if he’s that good, props go to them).

You Like School In The Summer, No ‘Class’: Teach Was A Punk Rocker

Have you seen “The Class” starring François Bégaudeau, the teacher of the film and author of the book that the film was based off of? Well, it’s pretty amazing as we’ve said over and over again this week. Well, did you know that the real school teacher/actor sang in a punk band called Zabriskie Point? Nice name, right? Aw, yeah, Antonioni homage. And yeah, it’s true. Thanks to Julien at Allocine for the tip.

NYFF Review: Palme d’Or Winner ‘Entres Les Murs’ (‘The Class’) Deserves Its High Marks And Much More

The New York Film Festival opens to the public next week September 26th with the opening night film, “Entre Les Murs” aka “The Class.”

And there’s a damn good reason why Laurent Cantet’s extraordinary picture won the coveted Palme d’Or at Cannes this year: cause it’s that fucking good.Based on a best-selling autobiographical novel by François Begaudeau, who also plays the main teacher in the film, the improvised-feeling, documentary-like picture crackles with spark and vim and tackles issues of race, gender, social status, economic class within the confines of the school room without ever feeling like a didactic lesson.
