You’ll recall that two week’s ago, news hit that James Bobin (dir. “Flight of the Conchords”) was officially attached to direct Disney’s new Muppet movie.

Written by Jason Segel (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” TV’s “Freaks and Geeks,” “How I Met Your Mother”) and Nicholas Stoller (dir. “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”), the script has been previously known as “The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made,” but the film, and script — that’s evidently somewhat hard to get your hands on — is actually now called, “The Greatest Muppet Movie of All Time.”

A friend of ours would not share said screenplay, said it was still being kept under semi-wraps, but did share quite a few details with us including the basic plot synopsis.

According to Aziz Ansari, there are only three things you need to know:

1. Y’all ain’t ready. 2. Motherfuckers need to know. 3. Get yo’ shit. The actor and comedian’s alter ego, Raaaaaaaandy is currently working with TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek, The Have and DJ Granwizerd on a hip hop mixtape that will drop sometime in February.

Ansari has never kept his love of hip hop a secret. Back in September, the comedian released a pretty hilarious “remix” of Jay-Z’s “Hate,” where he takes those annoying DJ blurts on mixtapes to some manic degrees.

This clip comes from Judd Apatow answers your questions live on “Funny or Die” (that happened yesterday). There’s not a lot to it, but the question, which isn’t set up, is about sequels and presumably whether he’d consider one. For “Superbad 2,” he says it’s not happening (despite him trying to convince Seth Rogen and Evan Golderberg, but he sounds like he’s joking… hopefully), but gives off a tiny whiff of hope for those that care to see a “Pineapple Express 2” film.

Is ex-Pulp songsmith Jarvis Cocker going to be the next go-to soundtrack songwriter du jour?

Cocker has already obviously been tapped by Wes Anderson to write songs for the animated feature, “Fantastic Mr. Fox” (though how many songs will make it into the final version of the film seems to be unclear) and now it looks like the Apatow gang has their sights set on the wry Brit rocker as well.

It appears that Cocker has penned three songs that will be included in the Russell Brand-starring vehicle, “Get Him To The Greek,” which is a sort of quasi sequel to the Apatow-produced, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”.

Last we heard about Jonah Hill’s “The Adventurer’s Handbook” — a spec-script co-written with Max Winkler and Matt Spicer — the screenplay had been sold to Universal for seven figures and Akiva Schaffer, known for his SNL Lonely Island skits with Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone was in negotiations to direct (and Jason Schwartzman c0-starring alongside Hill).

But looks like Schaffer is out and according to an L.A. Times article about Universal and its relationship and deals with Apatow and his buddies, Nick Stoller — director of “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” — has got the gig.

Alright, to recap, Judd Apatow’s upcoming dramedy, “Funny People,” stars Adam Sandler as a dying comedian coming to terms with life and death and Seth Rogen as a struggling comic trying to help him out. One of Rogen’s character’s friends, a more minor character in the film, is played by Jason Schwartzman (he’s also writing the music for the film), who is a self-obsessed NBC TV star on a sitcom called, “Yo Teach” (it even has its own fake NBC site, thanks to Vulture who noticed; Photos of which also reveal that “Undeclared” star Carla Gallo — who has also had smaller roles in Apatow projects, “Superbad,” Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” “The 40 Year Old Virgin,” etc.

At a recent screening for “I Love You, Man,” Jason Segel revealed that the inspiration for his character in the film was none other than his “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” co-star, Russell Brand.

“I prepared for my role by copying Russell Brand, that was really my main goal. Russell has a real, ‘This is who I am – take it or leave it,’ attitude that I noticed during ‘[Forgetting] Sarah Marshall’ that I thought would be perfect for this character – so I just ripped off Russell basically.”

‘Sarah Marshall’ has proven to be quite the stepping stone for both Segel and Brand.

Looks like Judd Apatow’s upcoming “Funny People,” dramedy is yielding what could be some pretty funny spin-offs for deeper DVD treats.

In the film, Jason Schwartzman (who’s also doing the music for the film) plays a TV star on a fake show called, “Yo Teach.”

He explained what the meta teacher show was about to ComingSoon: “[The fictional show] fits in somewhere between ‘Dangerous Minds’ and ‘The Cable Guy.’ I’m a teacher.

The intra-collaborative love of the Judd Apatow-crew continues. Russell Brand is obviously working on a spin-off to “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” where he once again plays the obnoxious rock star Aldous Snow that made Jason Segel’s character a living hell by stealing his ex-girlfriend (played by Kristen Bell), only this time, the British rocker has fallen off the wagon and all hell breaks loose.

The film, you might recall, is called, “Get HimTo The Greek,” (called a dirty, ‘Almost Famous’ like comedy) and also stars Jonah Hill in a different role as a young music executive who has to get the debauched and out-of-control Brand to a gig at the L.A.

We had some friends at the ground floor of the MTV Video Music Awards last year and they reported that Russell Brand and Britney Spears collaborator Jonah Hill, were doing pre-production work on the same lot for the upcoming “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” sorta-sequel, ” “Get Him to the Greek”; taking advantage of access to some the female musicians by shooting vignettes with the likes of Pink, Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera.

Now Rolling Stone reports that Oasis’ Liam and Noel Gallagher might have cameos in the Judd Apatow-produced picture as well.

2008 is obviously still on the brain and at will be at least for the next week if not longer. Here’s ten films we thought were grossly underrated. We were going to title this the 10 Most Underrated Films of 2008, but someone would have surely balked, only because we haven’t posted our top 20 list yet. These were definitely under-appreciated in our book though.

“In Bruges“
Colin Farell and Brendan Gleeson starred as contract killers sent to the medieval Belgian city of Bruges after a botched hit at the behest of their loose cannon boss Ralph Fiennes.

Ok, the AMPAs released their list of eligible songs in the Oscar Best Original Song category late yesterday. 49 songs written specifically for a film in total were deemed good to go including obvious picks by Bruce Springsteen (“The Wrestler”), Peter Gabriel (“Wall-E”) and Beyonce (“Cadillac Records”).

But there were som snubs, yes? No major drastic omission comes to mind at the moment, but we’re surprised some of the Elton John-penned songs from “Australia” didn’t make the cut considering how much the Academy has loved him in the past (yes, this is the first time we mentioned that there are four Elton John songs in the film, we forgot; we believe there’s also a Imogen Heap in there as well, but we never really watched that closely).

We thought it would never happen, but oh yes, the day has finally come. You all know what we are talking about, the studios execs over at WB are remaking the deeply gripping 2004 drama, “Cellular,” into a Chinese-language movie, currently titled “Connected.” It’s just a tad ironic, when one contemplates that a massive amount of Hollywood material is usually cribbed from the Hong Kong film industry (i.e. “The Departed”).

The 2004 film starring fraboy-du-jour Chris Evans centered around a kidnapped woman (Kim Basinger) who makes a call to a random mobile phone seeking help, and has the hilarious tag line of “If the signal dies, so does she.” The movie was critically acclaimed (well, not really) for its unflinching portrait of the rampant kidnappings and cellular phone oriented rescues in today’s urban America.

We saw this a couple days ago and shrugged. Whatever, John Mayer, right? But then we realized it was directed by Judd Apatow and stars “Freak & Geeks” alumni Martin Starr and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” belle and new Apatow-gang member Kristen Bell.

But most of all? And we kinda knew this, but hated to admit it? For a guy who writes such terrible music, John Mayer is kind of a really funny motherfucker, dude is really self-aware and he plays a parody of himself, really, really well.

We should get paid for Apatow publicity.

Producer/writer/director Judd Apatow is a smart and crafty dude. Not only does he have a stable of extremely loyal actors (he gave these guys careers), he’s basically created a veritable cottage industry of talent by getting two’fers and putting them to work to write “comedy of embarrassment” scripts for him to make and get rich off (they basically get rich when they sign on for other projects like Muppet movies).

During the shooting of the short-lived, but beloved Judd Apatow college sitcom, “Undeclared,” the producer/writer/director gave co-star Jason Segel (who he originally wanted as the lead) some simple and plain advice. “You’re a really weird guy. The only way you’re going to make it is if you write your own material.”

And after starring in a few Apatow supporting roles (most notably in “Knocked-Up”) Segel obviously did just that. Plus after both Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill made it big, it was time for the next big lovable schlub from the Apatow Family Players to take their shot at the lead spot.

Judd Apatow’s next romance disaster comedy, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall,” is right around the corner (April 18 release), so it’s no surprise that the soundtrack is arriving a little early on April 15.

The soundtrack features a few familiar faces, the most immediate being Michael Andrews’ (who scored Apatow’s ‘Walk Hard’) excellent side-project with L.A. ingenue Inara George called, The Bird & The Bee. Lead actor (who also wrote the screenplay) Jason Segel – who also did some signing on the “Freaks & Geeks” show and soundtrack – sings a track and as does Russell Brand via the movie’s fake band Infant Sorrow.

At the top of your list of Spring films already released that you should be seeing are “Snow Angels,” “Chicago 10” and “Paranoid Park.” OK, we can pretty much dispense with the chatter, you get it.

Another season, another Judd Apatow comedy.

This spring, (April 18 to be exact), “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” finally gives a lead part to longstanding Apatow troupe member Jason Segel (“Freaks & Geeks,” “Undeclared” a small “Knocked-Up” role”) who actually wrote the film as well.

Directed by Nicholas Stoller, who helmed a few episodes of “Undeclared” and directed “Fun With Dick and Jane” (which he co-wrote with Apatow), the plot of ‘Marshall’ revolves around a jilted ex (Segel) who tries to forget his famous celebrity ex and heartbreak by escaping to Hawaii only to find this ex gf, Sarah Marshall (played by “Veronica Mars”‘ Kristen Bell) there as well with her new boyfriend to boot (British comedian and TV personality Russell Brand).
