October is a gift to cinephiles. It’s home to a barrage of critically acclaimed prestige films beginning their rollout following festival runs and a time to immerse oneself in the horror genre. The latter is especially true with the curation at places such as TCM or The Criterion Channel, which has everything from the ’90s to art-house horror. With the new releases, there’s a mix of big, studio genre films, such as the latest in the “The Exorcist” series to launch the month, to foreign favorites, such as the highly anticipated “The Anatomy of a Fall.

There’s nothing like New York in the Fall— crisper air, pumpkin spice lattes, Cityside Pumpkin patch, the leaves changing in Central Park, and the New York Film Festival. What could be better?

The 61st annual New York Film Festival kicks off in a few days, and there is a lot to look forward to. Some films audiences may have seen at Telluride, TIFF, or Venice, but that doesn’t make this year’s line-up any less exciting as an exploratory and human theme is seen across sections of the film festival.

How well does a couple know each other? That’s the question behind the upcoming drama “Foe,” which chronicles a marriage’s disintegration with a sci-fi twist. And director Garth Davis has two of the UK’s great young acting talents as his stars: Saoirse Ronan and Paul Mescal. Based on Iain Reid‘s 2018 novel of the same name, the film revolves around Junior and Hen, spouses living on a remote farm, where their less-than-perfect idea of marriage becomes even more clouded by the appearance of Aaron Pierre‘s stranger, who has somewhat mysterious intentions.

It’s been a minute since we’ve heard from Aussie filmmaker Garth Davis. Getting a big lift on his career by co-directing much of “Top of the Lake” with the great Jane Campion,  Davis soon won the gig to direct the Oscar Best Picture nominee “Lion” starring Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman. Following “Mary Magdalene,” which impressed Joaquin Phoenix and Rooney Mara enough to co-star together, Davis is back with a new feature film titled “Foe.” The sci-fi thriller adaptation stars Irish actors Saoirse Ronan (“Lady Bird,” “Little Women“) and Paul Mescal (“Normal People“) and has been acquired by Amazon Studios.

To say Garth Davis has experienced an interesting filmmaking career is an understatement. After breaking out in a big way with his Oscar-nominated feature, “Lion,” he experienced some issues finding release for his follow-up, “Mary Magdelene.” And then, after the film finally was released, the filmmaker surprisingly landed the coveted gig as director of “Tron 3.” But before he jumps over to Disney, he is set to tackle a sci-fi drama, “Foe,” which features a pretty stacked cast.
