Some people love remakes, some people hate them, and some people see them as necessary to fund a more original project. But regardless of where one falls on the scale, remakes have been around for as long as we can remember, and they’re an integral part of the film industry.

READ MORE: ‘Final Cut’ Trailer: Michel Hazanavicius’ Remake Of ‘One Cut Of The Dead’ Arrives In July

Although the length of time between an original and a remake varies, it seems to be somewhere around six to ten years from the former to the latter which makes Michel Hazanavicius‘ timing for his latest project perfect.

So, you know what has to happen when a horror film earns acclaim and widespread notoriety, especially when it is of Asian origin? That’s right, we get a remake! However, with a filmmaker like Michel Hazanavicius’ directing “Final Cut,” it should be more than just a capable remake of Shin’ichirô Ueda’s “One Cut of the Dead,” right?

His two “OSS 117” films with Jean Dujardin are foreign cult comedies. And then the duo struck gold stateside with “The Artist,” which won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor at the 2012 Oscars. But Hazanavicius hasn’t caught on with US audiences since then: not with 2014’s “The Search” with his wife Bérénice Bejo, or 2017’s “Redoubtable,” a regrettable biopic dramedy about Jean-Luc Godard.

After “Redoutable,” centered on the relationship between Jean-Luc Godard and Anne Wiazemsky during the filming of “La Chinoise,” he again explored la magie du cinéma in “The Lost Prince,” where Omar Sy (the biggest star on French Netflix and, maybe, in French cinema tout court) saw the rich fantasy film-set world he had created for his daughter begin to crumble as she started to outgrow his fairytales.

For the first time in recent memory, acquisition films are dominating the proceedings. Sure, there are a few A24 and Amazon Studios films here and there, but for the most part, the mini-majors decided to pass on a hybrid in-person and virtual festival (for a variety of reasons). In many ways, that may benefit festival-goers who are in for more “unseen” surprises than usual.
