Say what you will about Michael Bay and his cinema bombast, but the guy knows how to make an epic thriller that usually needs to be seen on the big screen. His latest film, “Ambulance,” is a thriller based on the original story and screenplay for the 2005 Danish film “Ambulancen” written by Laurits Munch-Petersen and Lars Andreas Pedersen. When “Thor: Ragnarok” graced our screens and hearts with its presence back in 2017, the Marvel adaption turned heads in more ways than one. The film had the highest box office ratings out of all the ‘Thor’ movies to date, thanks in part to the immediate compatibility of two leads, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. Luckily for us, director F. Gary Gray (“The Italian Job,” “Straight Outta Compton”) took one look at this magnificent duo and had the idea we didn’t know we so desperately needed: Hemsworth and Thompson in a buddy cop movie.

Zach Braff has spent most of his filmmaking career being beaten up. Even though it was a Sundance Film Festival darling (and currently holds 86% on Rotten Tomoatoes, just fyi), “Garden State” has become an indie film joke, and the actor/director drew criticism when he launched a crowd-funding campaign for his far less well-received “Wish I Was Here.” But for his next movie, he’s doing something that’s perhaps a little less personal, but gives him a chance to exercise some new filmmaking muscles: directing a remake of the 1979 heist movie “Going In Style.” And the first trailer is here.

Three years ago, director Amma Asante broke out with “Belle,” her very well received drama about a mixed race woman being raised amongst the aristocracy of 18th century England. And now she returns with another tale where race is the focus, but it’s one from the not too distant past.

Starring David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike, the 1940s-set “A United Kingdom” tells the true story of the first President Of Botswana, who was forced into exile in England, all for choosing to marry a white woman.

The productions of Kenneth Lonergan films are often tortured. 2011’s “Margaret” began shooting in 2005, but Lonergan’s lengthy and over-schedule post-production sparked multiple lawsuits and the film landed in limbo for about five years (its original release date was in 2007). And thus in fifteen years, there’s only been two Lonergan films. Trouble seemed to be on the horizon for his latest, “Manchester By The Sea,” which was supposed to star Matt Damon, but the actor, who only had a short window to shoot the picture, had to bow out when it wasn’t ready go and “The Martian” came next.

One filmmaker who toys with the concept of a confined movie universe, but who flips it on its head and really does whatever the hell he wants with it is Todd Solondz.

While I’ve more than once pointed out that standard template used by comic book movies, it’s not the only genre that has a winning formula. The weepie romance also has a blueprint familiar to audiences, and while you’ll probably see every moment of the upcoming “Me Before You” coming from three miles away, for certain viewers, that doesn’t matter one one bit.

Starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin, and based on the book by Jojo Moyes, the story about a quirky young woman who falls for the disabled man she cares for is pure hokum, but again, for a certain audience, this might be pure hokum that really works.

It seems you can’t go a few weeks without hearing about a movie featuring Alicia Vikander. The actress is having a very busy 2015, with three movies on her slate for 2016, including the blockbuster “Jason Bourne” and the Derek Cianfrance directed “The Light Between Oceans.” But coming before both of those is “Tulip Fever,”  a movie she shot back in 2014 and which features a new experience for Vikander, oddly enough.

This summer, at least for a brief moment, Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe are going to make disco, polyester clothes, and outrageous facial hair cool again in “The Nice Guys.” And to go with the ’70s set action comedy, Warner Bros. has put together a pretty nifty retro style trailer for flick.

Looking like it was pulled out of a box in some archive hidden away in a studio warehouse, the cleverly aged promo features old school voiceover, vintage title treatment, and video that looks like it’s been warped with time.
