Perhaps it’s the fact the ceremony traditionally takes place in a tent on a beach. Maybe it’s the early afternoon brunch setting where an abundance of spirits are flowing. Or, maybe it’s the irreverent history of the awards themselves, but the Film Independent Spirit Awards has a legacy beyond recognizing the best in groundbreaking cinema, yes a legacy of landing some of the best awards show hosts in the history of awards shows.

The nominations for the 38th Film Independent Spirit Awards were revealed early Tuesday morning and a number of major Oscar contenders saw themselves get a nice indie boost. “Everything Everywhere All At Once” led all films with 8 nominations followed by “TAR” with 7 nods and “Aftersun” with five nods. 2022 winner Taylour Paige and 2019 nominee Raul Castillo made the announcement.

In the prestigious Best Feature category, “Everything Everywhere” and “TAR” were joined by “Women Talking,” “Bones and All” and, in something of a head-scratcher, “Our Father, the Devil,” which won the Best Narrative Feature at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival.

The 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards wonderfully returned to an in-person event on Sunday. That was the good news. The not-so-great news, and the elephant in the room, was that it wasn’t the finest three hours for first-time hosts Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally. This was somewhat unexpected, because, unlike the Oscars, Emmys, or Golden Globes, the Spirits have a very long track record of strong host performances. In fact, the last time the Spirits had this weak of an emcee was when Seth Rogen hosted a decade ago and even that wasn’t a major misfire (it was more disappointing than anything else).

The Oscars still haven’t announced their host (or hosts), but the Spirit Awards are all set. Film Independent’s venerable showcase is returning to the beach and to two new hosts. This year, Megan Mullaney and Nick Offerman will emcee the annual Santa Monica beach event.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that the awards ceremonies delayed way back in 2020 are still going to be seriously hampered due to the pandemic. The Grammy Awards and SAG Awards have already pushed their 2021 dates in hope of safer waters ahead and how the Oscars proceed is still unclear. Still, it was something of a surprise this morning when Film Independent announced that the 2021 Independent Spirit Awards will take place on Thursday, April 22, 2021.

The 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards were handed out in a ceremony Saturday afternoon in Santa Monica, Ca. Hosted for the second year in a row by Aubrey Plaza, who began the night with a hilarious yet poignant skit about how Hollywood and the film industry has always sucked the lives out of its workers, both today and in the past.

Plaza also mocked the state of independent film in light of streaming services, “Scorsese is doing films for Netflix, Sandler is doing dramas!” the host joked before going out on stage to sing a rendition of Judy Garland’s “Get Happy.” She later parodied “The Lighthouse” with Michael Shannon as Willem Dafoe’s character (honestly, we could watch a prequel with Shannon and Dafoe as brothers or something).
