Tomorrow morning, the Oscar nominations will be announced, but as is tradition, the folks at the Razzie Awards are riding the Academy’s coattails. The group has issued their nominations for the worst that 2017 had to offer, and everyone will argue about these entirely meaningless and pretty dumb awards anyway.

Certainly, you can’t debate their selections for Worst Picture: “Baywatch,” “The Emoji Movie,” “Fifty Shades Darker,” “The Mummy,” “Transformers: The Last Knight” (which earned the most nods with nine) were indeed all regrettable pictures.

At some point in our ever-comprehensive year-end coverage, especially after a pretty great movie year like this one, we simply get sick and tired of scanning our thesauruses for synonyms for “awesome.” And when that happens, we like to aggregate a list of splat-rated films, bloated follies and our own personal loathe objects, and hate-watch the shit out of them in preparation for this feature, which serves as the Kylo Ren to our Best of 2017’s Jyn Erso, or maybe the poop emoji to the rest of our coverage’s thumbs-up smiley face.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed 70 songs that qualify for the Best Original Song Oscar this afternoon. Films with more than one submission include “Beauty and the Beast,” “Call Me By Your Name,” “Cars 3,” “Elizabeth Blue” and “Pulimurugan.” It’s worth noting that “The Greatest Showman,” a musical featuring original songs from last year’s winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, only submitted one song, “This Is Me.”

The stress of bringing a best-selling book to the big screen is already intense, but add an author who’s overzealously protective about their work and you have a recipe for conflict. There was no shortage of battles during the production of “Fifty Shades Of Grey,” with director Sam Taylor-Johnson admitting she got into “proper on-set barneys” with writer E.L. James. And screenwriter Kelly Marcel noted that the studio’s promise that she’d have creative flexibility were “utter bullshit,” adding that, “ultimately, Erika did have all of the control.” So, it’s not a big surprise that Taylor-Johnson has washed her hands of the erotica franchise.

The “Fifty Shades Of Grey” franchise is showing that it doesn’t have much lasting power in the cinematic bedroom. While the first film topped $571 million worldwide, the follow-up, “Fifty Shades Darker,” could only manage $378 million. That’s still a nice number, but generally speaking, you don’t want your sequel to make nearly $200 million less than its predecessor, so Universal might be advised to upgrade the kink for the final entry in the series, “Fifty Shades Freed.”

As Screen Junkies reveals in their latest Honest Trailer, ‘Darker’ only has about ten minutes of sex, in an otherwise unsatisfying movie about a young woman who is stalked by a good half-dozen people, and a man who throws up so many red flags, no reasonable person should be dating him, even less allowing him to tie them up.

It’s the weekend before Valentine’s Day, and surely there were more than a few pre-love day dates at the multiplex, but it seems audiences were more in the mood for action, than kinky romance.

As predicted, “The Lego Batman Movie” won the weekend, but with $55.6 million, it’s a shade under the $60 million bow Warner Bros. was expecting. Even more, despite opening on two hundred more screens, the brick built superhero movie opened under the $69 million launch of “The Lego Movie.” It’s perhaps an indication to the studio that the more niche driven entries in the Lego franchise may play to a slightly smaller crowd, and you can bet that WB will adjust their outlook for the upcoming “The Lego Ninjago Movie.” All that being said, family movies have much longer legs than most, and ‘Batman’ should still rack up a sizable haul by time it wraps up.

If 2015’s “Fifty Shades of Grey” was brutally testing, “Fifty Shades Darker” is torturous. A cinematic soap opera series as sexy and stimulating as laundry detergent, and featuring far less friction, this painfully soporific sensual sequel somehow becomes even less enticing and rousing than Sam Taylor-Johnson’s tediously compromised original. Actively dull and astoundingly flaccid, the monotonously dreary, everlastingly humdrum BDSM fan fiction franchise can never quite decide if it’d rather be smutty or classy.
