After a lengthy hiatus, Ryan Murphy’s 45th anthology series (that’s obvious not the exact number, but I’m definitely in the ballpark), “Feud,” returns for its upcoming season titled ‘Capote vs. the Swans.’ And judging by the trailer, this is very much a Ryan Murphy series.

But the two projects do share one thing beyond mere timing: in different ways and with varying degrees of self-awareness, both can be read as a comment on Hollywood’s treatment –  past and present – of “difficult,” “unlikable” or otherwise potentially unpopular actresses.

“Feud,” Ryan Murphy‘s latest television brainchild, has a simple-enough premise, with each season tracking the contentious relationship between a set of key characters. Season one will kick off soon with Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon squaring off as Joan Crawford and Bette Davis. FX is so pleased with concept, they’ve gone ahead and renewed the show, but the folks over at Netflix likely won’t be happy to hear what the next batch of episodes will be focusing on.
