The nominations for the 20th Costume Designer Guild Awards were revealed today and thanks to three thematic categories for both Movies and TV there were few omissions to complain about.  Expected Oscar nominees “Phantom Thread,” “The Shape of Water” and “The Greatest Showman” all made the cut in the very competitive Period Film field with Jacqueline Durran‘s work in “Darkest Hour” and Ann Roth‘s costumes for “The Post” being the only true snubs (although Durran did earn a Sci-Fi/Fantasy nod for “Beauty and the Beast”).

It’s Golden Globes time. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association revealed the nominations for the 75th Golden Globe Awards this morning. The nominees were announced by Kristen Bell, Alfre Woodard, Garrett Hedlund and Sharon Stone.

This category is very, very interesting. Emmy voters rewarded great performances that might not have made the cut, such as Jackie Hoffman, as well as longtime favorites such as Regina King (the winner in this category the past two years) and Judy Davis (12-time nominee, three-time winner including twice in this category). But, Laura Dern is now a six-time nominee who has never won and Michelle Pfieffer is a first-timer who falls into the legendary category with the ladies in the lead version of this category.

The network’s brand new, expensive, and somewhat risky sci-fi series “Westworld” is the toast of the town, with the series leading the field with 22 nominations. The show is tied with “Saturday Night Live” for the most nominations, with the sketch show no doubt aided by a very buzzy election year, which saw Alec Baldwin frequently guest as Donald Trump, and Melissa McCarthy play Sean Spicer.

Yes, it’s almost time to reveal the nominations for the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards and some of the world’s biggest stars have learned to care and fret about the Emmys like they never have before. And so are the networks and streaming services behind the series, limited series and TV movies vying for those pretty gold statuettes.

There are no official statistics as of yet, but, based on just the live events staged by Netflix and Amazon over the past few months, this has been arguably the most expensive Emmys campaign to date.

Appropriately timed for the first phase of Emmy voting, the prestigious Television Critics Association announced its nominees for the 2017 TCA Awards, which featured a strong showing by both FX‘s “Atlanta” and Hulu‘s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” as they walked away with the most nominations.

Both series received four nods, including respective nominations for Outstanding New Program and Program of the Year.  Other nominees in the latter category included “Big Little Lies,” “Stranger Things,” “The Leftovers,” and “This Is Us.”

The TCA members spread the wealth this year, with notable programs such as “Feud: Bette and Joan,” “Fargo,” “Veep,” and “Master of None” all earning multiple nominations.

But the two projects do share one thing beyond mere timing: in different ways and with varying degrees of self-awareness, both can be read as a comment on Hollywood’s treatment –  past and present – of “difficult,” “unlikable” or otherwise potentially unpopular actresses.

This weekend sees the final episode of “Feud,” which stars Susan Sarandon and Jessica Lange as Hollywood legends Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, respectively, as they scheme and catfight their way through the filming of “Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?” It also sees the second weekend of “The Fate Of The Furious,” the eighth ‘Fast And The Furious‘ film which stars Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, who reportedly fell out on set due to Diesel being a “candy ass” (Johnson’s words).
