In one of the earliest announcements in recent memory, the Cannes Film Festival announced early Thursday morning Paris time the president of the jury for 2024. And, in something of a surprise, this year’s president is Greta Gerwig, a soon-to-be multiple Oscar nominee for the 2023 blockbuster “Barbie.” Gerwig is the first woman to lead the jury since Cate Blanchett in 2018 and the second American this decade after Spike Lee presided over the first post-pandemic jury in 2021.

The movies that will delight and disappoint have not been announced yet but it’s already guaranteed that history will be made at the 72nd Festival de Cannes this May. This morning the Festival revealed that Alejandro G. Iñárritu will be the first Mexican to hold the title of President of the Jury. Iñárritu follows last year’s Jury President, Cate Blanchett.

In a statement from the festival, Iñárritu remarked, “Cannes is a festival that has been important to me since the beginning of my career, he has declared.
