Released in 2007, Canadian musician Feist’s third solo album, The Reminder, soon took the music industry by storm, when the song “1234,” became a surprise hit after it was prominently featured in a commercial for the iPod nano. The album has sold over 1,000,000 copies worldwide and is certified gold in the U.S. In 2008 she she won the coveted “Album of the Year” at the Canadian Juno awards. Not too shabby. The artist is back and, no, it’s not a new album, though one is evidently being worked on, but a new documentary called, “Look at What the Light Did Now” that looks like an intimate peak into creativity rather than you’re average tour documentary.

Scored to a remix of Feist’s “I Feel It All” and Coldplay’s “Life In Technicolor,” the trailer for Galt Niederhoffer’s forthcoming dramedy has seemingly has its aim dead set on 20 and 30-somethings. Certainly, boasting a cast featuring the likes of Katie Holmes, Anna Paquin, Josh Duhamel, Malin Akerman, Elijah Wood & Adam Brody doesn’t hurt in that ambition either.

Its seem like pretty standard material, and the synopsis culled from the film’s Facebook page seems to confirm it:

‘The Romantics’, a zeitgeist love story and generational comedy, takes place over the course of one night at a deluxe seaside wedding.

A few housekeeping notes. 1) Normally we’d be finished our 2009 Toronto International Film Festival coverage by now, but we’ve been a little under the weather this week, so don’t be surprised if/when you see three, four more reviews straggle out next week. It’s also the NYFF here in NYC/BK which exhausts us even more and doesn’t help you get any better.

Anywho. OK, so if you’re at TIFF every year you know they have a theme song and it’s generally from a up-and-coming Canadian artist.

Obviously the notion of what constitutes selling out is constantly changing and evolving in the modern digital era. Many already feel that the concept of “selling out” is an antiquated one that no longer is relevant in this accelerated age.

Times are changing and the standards for what is acceptable have loosened. Feist in a ITunes commercial? Fans are fine with it. Sure people like Brad Pitt still make their cell phone commercials with people like Spike Jonze and Wes Anderson overseas, but when North American audiences spot them — and inevitably they do — the creativity involved usually supersedes any notions of rich people getting further paid for endorsing lucrative products.

For years now, Broken Social Scene founder Kevin Drew has expressed a the wish to converge his cinematic ideals and his musical output. He started in 2003 by co-directing a good chunk of his indie-rock collective’s videos with partner George Vale.

So not surprisingly he’s made further good on this promise by directing a short film (in the style of a music video) set to Feist’s “The Water” that stars Leslie Feist, Cillian Murphy and Canadian actor David Fox.

Yesterday’s Reuter’s article on Colombian actress Catalina Sandino Moreno check its brain at the door: or at least where the headline is concerned.

Writing a profile on the actress for the upcoming Ethan Hawke movie (“The Hottest State“; which opens this Friday), Reuters wrote as a headline: “Colombian Actress Swaps Heroin for Nudity,” simply because her last notable role was of a drug mule (“Maria Full of Grace“) and her recent ‘State’ role is of a singer trying to make it New York (who happens to take her clothes off to have sex with her boyfriend, as couples are wont to do).

The film,”Paris Je T’aime” features every known director and actor in the movie industry. Ok, not actually, but sort of. The collection of love-letter vignettes about and in an around the city of lights was originally based around the 20 municipal boroughs of Paris (arrondissements) – one short film per borough – however, two of the shorts could not be properly integrated into the film, so the final film has 18 shorts.

This is the type of news we’d like to be breaking, sigh… According to Pitchfork, Ethan Hawke’s new film, “The Hottest State” features a soundtrack written by Nora Jones collaborator Jesse Harris (he wrote or co-wrote almost all of her first Grammy award-winning album). The semi-interesting news of note is that most of Harris’ songs are recorded and performed by various indie-rockers including Feist, Cat Power, Bright Eyes, M. Ward and Emmy-Lou Harrison. I think MTV first reported Feist and Willis Nelson’s inclusion on this soundtrack back in March of 2006 (but no, we’re not touting ourselves or anything).
