Finally. After eight years, it’s finally here. Wait, you aren’t one of the presumed millions of people who’ve been waiting almost a decade for a director’s cut of “Fair Game?” Well, whoever’s been asking for this, your prayers are answered and all praise rightfully goes to President Trump.

Sarcasm aside, if you’ve never seen the true-life political drama, which was originally released in 2010, don’t expect to be called before a firing squad.

Exclusive: John Powell’s Score To Doug Liman’s ‘Fair Game’ Hits October 26

British composer John Powell has written the scores to all of Doug Liman’s films so far, including “The Bourne Identity” and set the thrilling musical tone for the entire ‘Bourne’ series (and several Paul Greengrass films), so it’s no real surprise he’s also done the music for Liman’s upcoming political drama, “Fair Game.”

The film retells the true story of undercover CIA Agent, Valerie Plame Wilson (played by Naomi Watts), who was outed by the White House in 2003 in an effort to discredit her journalist husband, Joseph Wilson (Sean Penn), who had written a piece in the NY Times saying the Bush Administration had manipulated intelligence about the W.M.D.

What to make of director Doug Liman. We’ve said it several times now, the man seems torn by two opposing forces inside. One that makes fluff films (“Jumper,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) and one that wants to make serious films like “Fair Game” and the “Attica” prison riots picture. “The Bourne Identity” is still arguably the best Bourne of the trilogy, but his resume has been a consistent mix of escapist entertainment and intelligent filmmaking.

The trailer for Doug Liman’s “Fair Game” drama starring Sean Penn and Naomi Watts is out and it’s well cut and looks intriguing.

Our review from Cannes earlier this year wasn’t entirely positive, but this writer will admit his interest is still piqued as this looks certainly above what we were expecting. Based on the true-life Plamegate story, the film chronicles the fallout of covert CIA agent Valarie Plame (Watts), whose identity was compromised when White House officials outed her position in a retribution-like bid to discredit her husband (played by Penn) who had written a New York Times op-ed piece positing that the Bush administration had manipulated intelligence about weapons of mass destruction to justify the invasion of Iraq.

‘Fair Game’ Starring Naomi Watts & Sean Penn Will Hit Theaters On November 5th

It was one of the biggest stories at the time, so it’s not a surprise that the tale of CIA Agent Valerie Plame Wilson and what transpired when her husband, Joseph Wilson, wrote a 2003 New York Times op-ed piece saying that the Bush administration had manipulated intelligence about weapons of mass destruction to justify the invasion of Iraq, has been turned into a movie.

Directed by Doug Liman, “Fair Game” premiered at Cannes this past spring and while the film itself was perhaps a bit uneven, the performances by Sean Penn and Naomi Watts should definitely put them into awards season contention.

Doug Liman’s ‘Three Musketeers’ May Be Dead; Might Move On To ‘All You Need Is Kill’

With Paul W.S. Anderson’s “The Three Musketeers” underway shortly, with a surprisingly impressive cast (considering its helmer) including Christoph Waltz, Mads Mikkelsen, Matthew MacFayden, Juno Temple and Logan Lerman, it was always only a matter of time before something gave with Warner Bros’ rival version, which had Doug Liman attached to direct.

Deadline reported overnight that, with Summit’s 3D film shooting in August and set for release next April, Warner Bros, will be meeting with Liman later in the week about the future of the project as well as talk about potentially getting him behind the camera for the sci-fi actioner “All You Need Is Kill,” which writer Dante Harper wrote on spec, as an adaptation of the Hiroshi Sakurazaka novel.

A last minute entry to the festival, Ken Loach’s “Route Irish” is not a straight dramatization of actual events like Doug Liman’s “Fair Game,” but instead explores the damaged psyche of the men who return from the Middle East and are left on their own to try and heal the wounds left by what they’ve seen and the friends they’ve lost.

Do we really need another Iraq war drama? That will certainly be the biggest question critics will be asking in the lead up to the release of Doug Liman’s “Fair Game” and it’s a fair one. American cinema has seen an endless string of documentaries and feature films on almost every aspect of the lead up, attack and current state in Iraq that the effect has almost become deadening. With the falsified documents, trumped-up reasoning and other failures of the so-called War On Terror now common knowledge and a cautionary tale, it’s increasingly difficult for a feature film to find fresh insights and hit a new nerve on the matter.

The 2010 Cannes Film Festival kicks off today, and yes, The Playlist will be in attendance again this year (though we don’t arrive until the weekend – no point in flying early to see “Robin Hood”). As we scour the schedules, get packed and get the details in place before we hit the Riviera this weekend we’ve highlighted the ten films we’re eager to see. Once we got over the absence of Terrence Malick’s highly anticipated “Tree Of Life,” we realized there is still a lot to look forward to this year.

With it’s surprising competition slot at this year’s Cannes Film Festival — surprising in that it’s the director’s followup to “Jumper” — new images and a preview clip have been unveiled of Doug Liman’s much-buzzed about political thriller “Fair Game.”

It’s not even March, but some sites are already dropping their Cannes 2010 predictions/educated guesses.

ScreenDaily has been the first to drop theirs which means the trades should be behind shortly. Last year when Screen Daily dropped their Cannes 2009 predictions they went about 12 for 19 making their guess work about 63% correct. When the Hollywood Reporter dropped their Cannes predix last year they went about 13 out of 21 which is about 62% accurate.

Despite the somewhat mixed results of his projects, particularly recently, we’re always glad to see Doug Liman get work. He’s been a controversial figure ever since “The Bourne Identity,” which overcame a disastrous production process to spawn Universal’s most important franchise, and, despite major hiccups and recastings on both “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and “Jumper,” they were both hits, albeit to varying degrees. He’s clearly not the favorite hire of most studios, due to the transient, experimental nature of his process, but he’s rarely made an uninteresting film, and we’re looking forward to his Valerie Plame movie “Fair Game,” starring Naomi Watts and Sean Penn, later in the year.

Alright, once again, we’re throwing down the gauntlet. You’re looking at 10-15 films for 2010? We’ve upped our game from last year and covered 81 films in total (our headline is 75-something cause not all of them might arrive in 2010).

Looking at last year’s 60+ most anticipated films list and then compare it to 2010’s slate. No disrespect to those delivering films in 2010, but it’s just not quite as strong. At least not on the surface, but there’s still tons of good films arriving including a new Terrence Malick film and new pictures by Christopher Nolan, David O.

Naomi Watts Outed As The New Valerie Plame; Sean Penn May Co-Star In Doug Liman Drama

Naomi Watts is not only looking like the new, slightly younger looking version of Nicole Kidman, now the Aussie actress is taking her bff’s roles. Doug Liman’s drama about out CIA Agent, Valerie Plame Wilson, now titled, “Fair Game,” was to set Kidman, early last year, but now it looks like Watts has stepped into the role instead according to Variety.

The missing ingredient is Sean Penn who is in negotiations to play Ambassador Joseph Wilson, Plame’s husband since 1998.
