Sometimes deadlines get the best of us, and if we had a second crack at The Best Films Of 2018…We’ve Already Seen, “Sweet Country” would’ve certainly made the cut. The new film from Warwick  Thornton picked up a slew of awards at film festivals throughout the past year, and we highly recommend this western, which crackles with racial tension.

Starring Sam Niell, Bryan Brown, Hamilton Morris, and Ewen Leslie, the film heads to Australia’s Northern Territory, where an Aboriginal man goes on the run after killing a white man.

There’s no doubt that more than a few doors were kicked open for Jennifer Kent thanks to the rave reviews and breakout sensation status of her 2014 horror “The Babadook,” but the filmmaker has taken her time deciding her next move. While rumors floated she was being considered to helm Marvel‘s “Captain Marvel,” she’s thankfully putting her efforts toward another original movie, one that sounds pretty promising.

And you can see how in that maudlin state he might long for the simplicity and security of childhood again. It’s unfair that some movies just slip through the cracks, and despite screening at both Venice and Toronto film festivals in 2015, Simon Stone‘s “The Daughter” — which we called “a quiet, immensely affecting triumph” — failed to earn much attention. Thankfully, Kino Lorber are stepping up to bring the Australian drama stateside, and hopefully it can find the audience it deserves.
