If you are curious as to what films Oscar voters overseas may be inclined to support, look no further than the nominees for the 37th European Film Awards. The European Film Academy revealed this year’s crop of honorees this morning and two potential Best Picture nominees, Pedro Almodovar’s “The Room Next Door” and Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Perez” led all films with four nominations including Best European Film. Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” also earned a Best European Film nom as well as Director and Screenplay.

Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” is continuing its winning ways. The courtroom drama already won the Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival and picked up two major honors at the Gotham Awards almost two weeks ago. On Saturday, the NEON release, which has earned $14.9 million outside the U.S., took five prizes at the prestigious European Film Awards including European Film, European Director (Triet), European Actress (Sandra Hüller), and European Screenwriter (Triet, Arthur Harari).

The 35th European Film Awards nominations were announced Tuesday morning and, for the first time in recent memory, they may influence the upcoming 2023 Oscar season. International Film contenders Lukas Dhont’s “Close” and Ali Abbasi’s “Holy Spider” as well as Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winner “Triangle of Sadness” taking four nominations each. They were joined in the prestigious European Film category by Carla Simón’s “Alcarràs” and Marie Kreutzer’s “Corsage.”

In a tight Oscar race in the International Film category, Thomas Vinterberg‘s celebrated “Another Round” is increasingly looking like an easy bet for a nomination. The Venice Film Festival drama swept the major honors at the 2020 European Film Awards including European Film, Director (Vinterberg), Actor (Mads Mikkelsen) and Screenplay. The film, distributed by Samuel Goldwyn in the United States, was originally set to debut at the canceled 2020 Cannes Film Festival.

It may not have won the Best Picture Oscar, but a little over nine months later “The Favourite” is in the winner’s circle again.  Yorgos Lanthimos’ dramedy took European Film, European Director (Lanthimos), European Actress Olivia Colman and Best Comedy at the 32nd European Film Awards in Berlin, Germany on Saturday.  It was the first almost completely English-language film to win the top prize since Paolo Sorrentino’s “Youth” in 2015.

The nominations for the 2019 European Film Awards were announced on Saturday morning at the Seville Film Festival and in no surprise, Pedro Almodovar’s “Pain and Glory” took four nods including European Film, European Director (Almodovar), European Actor (Antonio Banderas) and European Screenwriter (Almodovar). Two other films surprised with four nominations including the top prize; Roman Polanski’s “An Officer and A Spy” and Marco Bellocchio’s “The Traitor.”  And, thanks to a unique qualification calendar, Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite” earned three nods including European Film.

Pawel Pawlikowski’s celebrated drama “Cold War” may have been snubbed by the Hollywood Foreign Press, but the Polish filmmaker’s European peers crowned it European Film of the Year and honored it with three other awards. Not bad for a film many also thought should have won the Palme d’Or last May.

An Amazon Studios release in the United States, “Cold War” also saw Pawlikowski taking the European Director and European Screenwriter categories.

There was another big event last night besides the world premiere of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” While everyone was freaking out about porgs (or whatever), the European Film Awards were handed out in Berlin. And one film ruled them all.

Ruben Ostlund‘s comedic takedown of modern art and the ignorance of the bourgeois, “The Square,” swept the ceremony winning Best European Film, Best European Comedy, Best Actor for Claes Bang, and Best Director.

The past few weeks have been pretty damn good for “Toni Erdmann.” Maren Ade‘s film topped the list of Best Films Of 2016 from the choosy Cahiers Du Cinéma, and also did the same for the folks over at Sight & Sound. Now it’s adding more hardware to the shelf with a sweep at the European Film Awards last night.
