While the Marvel Studios narrative generally goes: an unimpeachable run at the box-office and with critics until 2023’s flop “The Marvels,” a closer inspection of the whole story arguably shows chinks starting to show in the armor during the pandemic. While it’s unfair to compare the box office of pandemic-era movies like “Shang Chi” and “Black Widow” to their non-pandemic counterparts, one film that seemed to take it in the teeth, regardless, was Chloe Zhao’s “Eternals” (read our review here).

Before its release, “Eternals” was poised to be a massive hit. You could argue that no new Marvel franchise has a better cast. The filmmaker, Chloé Zhao was coming off of Oscar wins. And the group of characters seemed like a new and interesting take on the classic superhero tropes. Sadly, the finished product didn’t light up the box office or score high reviews from fans and critics, leading to a lot of questions surrounding the future of the franchise.

Marvel Studios took some big chances when making “Eternals,” a feature film about the obscure god-like superheroes that the iconic Jack Kirby created. The Chloé Zhao-directed film took some liberties with the characters. One of those choices was making Barry Keoghan’s Druig, the villainous cousin of Ikaris, a more heroic and slightly romantic figure than his comic book counterpart leaving room for his return in a sequel.
