There is something comforting and appealing about “Champions” in that it’s the type of film that used to be multiplex mainstays in the ’80s and ’90s but now usually pops up on a streaming service’s carousel without much fanfare. Audiences need accessible and entertaining movies like this. 

It’s an adaptation of the 2018 Spanish film “Campeones,” which drew its inspiration from a real-life team of people with intellectual disabilities.

Behind-the-scenes documentaries are far from being a new, groundbreaking piece of filmic art—from countless behind-the-scenes looks at uber-franchises “Star Wars” and the MCU to fascinating peeks into previously untold stories (2015’s excellent ‘Fantastic Four’ doc, “Doomed”) or cult classics (“Jodorowsky’s Dune”). “Ghostbusters” has seen its fair share, such as 2016’s fan-focused “Ghostheads.” And with “Cleanin’ Up The Town: Remembering Ghostbusters,” another attempt to shed some light on the original film and reveal various factoids of which the general public may have previously been unaware, there are some interesting stories to be found, but overall, Anthony Bueno’s film is a forgettable watch for the casual filmgoer and a useless rehash of existing material to which fans have likely already been subject time and again.

When you take ten years to wrestle a script into place, a few ideas are going to fall by the wayside. This was the case with “Zombieland: Double Tap,” whose journey to the big screen involved plenty of rewrites, tweaks, and expired jokes. And as is often the case with long-gestating projects, sometimes it’s the ideas that didn’t come to fruition that are the most interesting.

Case in point: originally, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick had hoped to build on the success of Bill Murray‘s cameo in the original film by creating a “Ghostbusters“-themed apocalypse in the sequel.

Since the new “Ghostbusters” film, directed by Jason Reitman, was announced, it’s been rumored and reported that most of the original cast of the 1984 comedy would be back to pass the torch in the film. We’ve had a couple of reports linking Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and the rest to the new film, but we haven’t really heard from the actors themselves if they’d be returning.

Just last week, there was no hope for a new “Ghostbusters” film and it appeared as if the franchise was currently dead. But now, not only do we know that filmmaker Jason Reitman is going to tackle his father’s old franchise but we actually saw a teaser debut and know that a reboot-quel, set in the same universe as the original, is scheduled to hit theaters in summer 2020.

Here we are, then —after two years of hype, ludicrous sexist abuse and speculation, the new “Ghostbusters” movie (“Ghostbusters: Answer The Call,” to go by its closing-credit title) hits theaters tomorrow after already having rolled out in some parts of the world. But for now, it looks like it’s going to be a pretty successful relaunch —reviews have mostly been good, though not universally so (ours is at the more negative end of the spectrum, though it still finds some funny stuff), and the box office returns seem like they should be strong.
