Best known for his acclaimed 2013 film “2 Autumns, 3 Winters,” filmmaker Sebastien Betbeder has built a stable, yet under-the-radar career making underrated observational comedies, a trend that he continues with his latest film “Ulysses and Mona,” which just premiered at the Toronto Film Festival. Featuring former soccer star turned actor Eric Cantona (“Looking for Eric“) as the titular Ulysses and Manal Issa as Mona, this low-key film follows a reclusive artist’s attempt to make amends with the family and friends that he has wronged.

In Theaters: ‘Robin Hood,’ Just Wright,’ ‘Looking For Eric’

Funny little line-up this week with “Robin Hood” opening against a couple of female-skewing romantic releases. A Ridley Scott/Russell Crowe action film should be a bonafide summer smash, but audiences seem more interested in Tony Stark’s grandstanding than Crowe’s brooding these days and the reviews are very mixed. The sports themed romance “Just Wright” should do modest business alongside “Letters to Juliet” this week. On the limited front, a favorite from Cannes last year, “Looking for Eric” opens in NYC and LA, along with the worthwhile documentary “Beetle Queen Conquers Tokyo.” Here’s the rundown:

In Wide Release: The lastest from team Scott/Crowe made its splashy, star-studded premiere on the Cannes red carpet earlier this week but despite all the glitz and glamor it remains to be seen if audiences are in the mood for a serious, epic and long (two and half hours plus) journey through Sherwood Forest.

Argh and curse our old botched site (thanks Google). It’s really been forward steam ahead for us, but lately we haven’t been able to get cached versions of our old stories back which is kind of aggravating the shit out of us (we should have good news next week, sigh…).

Anyhow, that’s a whiny preamble about how we can’t dig up our 2009 Cannes review of Ken Loach’s life-affirming dramedy, “Looking For Eric,” which opens in theaters (limited release this weekend; and we had hoped to simply reprint or recycle it).

Cannes ’09: Ken Loach’s Shoots And Scores With Celebratory Life Lessons Football Dramedy, ‘Looking For Eric’

What an unexpected treat Ken Loach’s soccer inspiring football-centric “Looking For Eric,” was and makes the case for going into a film mostly blind.

Loach’s 2006 film “The Wind That Shakes The Barley” won the Palm d’Or that year, but we didn’t know much about this one going in other than it was apparently a “comedy” — not the most obvious genre, for the naturalistic, kitchen-sink dramatist — and that it revolved around football (soccer for the yanks).
