Wanna feel old? The 75th Primetime Emmy Awards are coming this September. Yes, the television industry’s premier honor is three-quarters of the way to the century mark. And to celebrate, the Television Academy revealed key art for the 2023 ceremony that includes a “75” in the Emmy logo to commemorate the occasion. Oh, and FOX, which is broadcasting this year’s ceremony announced the telecast will take place on Monday, September 18.

This is the second year in a row the Emmys will take place on a Monday.

The Television Academy giveth and the Television Academy taketh away. Even in a year with insanely wide-open races in the comedy and drama categories, the Television Academy raised eyebrows once again with the 2021 Emmy Awards. Granted, it could have been much, much worse. And sure, it doesn’t look great that almost the entire cast of “SNL” got nominated one way or another (we’re not really exaggerating), but there was some genuine joy among the rubble of nominations this morning.

Ron Cephas Jones and Jasmine Cephas Jones, the only father and daughter pair to win Emmys in the same year, revealed the 2021 Emmy Awards nominees on Thursday and the surprises were plentiful. “The Crown” and “The Mandalorian” tied for 24 nods while “WandaVision” (23), “The Handmaid’s Tale” (21), “Saturday Night Live” (21), “Ted Lasso” (20), and the now-canceled “Lovecraft Country” (18) followed. And history was also made in a number of categories.

The Television Academy revealed the nominees for the 2020 Emmys on Tuesday morning, a moment that was remarkably delayed only a few weeks because of the coronavirus pandemic. Roughly 23,000 voters stuck to some old favorites and some popular new series as Disney Plus’ “The Mandalorian” surprised earning 15 nominations including Best Drama Series and Zendaya earned a Lead Actress in a Drama Series nod for “Euphoria.” Among networks, it wasn’t a surprise that Netflix overtook HBO for the most nominations, but they dominated the proceedings with 160 nods to 107 for HBO.

The next incarnation of the Academy Awards has been delayed, but the Primetime Emmy Awards are still moving forward. What won’t be occurring are live versions of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards. They side ceremonies to the main Emmys telecast will now occur virtually.

Originally set for Sept 12-13, the Television Academy revealed that the Creative Arts Emmys will now take place over several undetermined nights in September instead. How the awards will be handed out is still in “development.” The Creative Arts Emmys recognize artists and craftspeople in categories across all genres including reality, variety, documentary, animation, comedy, drama, limited series and movies.

We’re not sure exactly why the Television Academy thought it was necessary to refresh everyone’s memory about its new rule regarding streaming and television eligibility for the Emmys announced this past March. Perhaps they just wanted to remind submitting networks or clear the air following the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ recent temporary rule change due to the coronavirus pandemic. And yet, here we are.

In a statement, the Television Academy noted:

“The Television Academy supports the recent decision from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to allow feature films, originally intended for theatrical distribution but made available via streaming or video on demand during the current pandemic crisis, to compete at the 2021 Oscars.  Further, the Television Academy ruled in March that effective in 2021, programs that have been nominated for an Oscar will no longer be eligible for the Emmys competition.”

The rule change was a long-overdue decision on the Television Academy’s part to ensure that films don’t double-dip into both the Emmy and Oscar award pools.

Frankly, there was a lot we predicted and, shocker, a lot we didn’t.  The 2019 Emmy Award nominations displayed a wealth of love for shows saying goodbye such as “Game of Thrones” and “Veep.” They also reiterated their affection for “Barry,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and anything James Corden seems to touch.  But, as always, there were just as many snubs as there were surprises.

At a spry 96-years-old, Norman Lear has proved that the career of a television pioneer is never really over. After creating or co-creating classic TV programs from the ’70s and 80’s such as “All in the Family,” “Good Times,” “Maude” and “The Jeffersons,” Lear segued to movie producing and political advocacy. In 2017 he returned to television with Netflix’s modern-day version of “One Day At A Time.” And while the future of that series appears to still be in limbo, Lear is far from done.

Netflix’s “The Crown” scored unexpected Directing and Best Actress in a Drama Emmys for Stephen Daldry and Claire Foy, respectively. And “The Americans” took the Drama Writing and Best Actor statues for series showrunners Joe Weinberg and Joel Fields; and Matthew Rhys.

Members of the Television Academy are officially voting for the 2018 Emmy nominations in a year where the awards promotion machine hit new highs.  Netflix effectively built an almost 400 seat theater for 37 events at Raleigh Studios in Hollywood (and that doesn’t even count the screenings they did at the Television Academy theater in North Hollywood).  Even with fewer players Amazon Studios once again took over the Hollywood Athletic Club for a few weeks to tout their contenders and NBC made substantial pushes for “This Is Us” and “Will & Grace.”  The Television Academy even admitted there weren’t enough nights in their screening calendar for every show that wanted to participate as peak TV means simply too many contenders battling for recognition.

Hollywood may be in the thick of guild and Oscar voting, but the Television Academy knows Emmy season is right around the corner.  This morning they announced, along with this year’s broadcaster NBC, that the 70th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on Monday, Sept. 17, 2018.

NBC will broadcast the ceremony live from 8-11 p.m ET / 5-8 p.m. PT from the Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles.

Another year, and another Emmy Awards have wrapped up, and pundits are still reflecting on how it all shook out. The big winners of the night — “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Big Little Lies” — shared a common thread, beyond giving dramatic voice to women in leading roles. Both Hulu and HBO‘s series rolled out traditionally, with week by week episodes, instead of following the Netflix and Amazon format of dumping all the episodes at once.

When I sat down with Matt and Ross Duffer (collectively known as the Duffer Brothers) last month they were pretty calm, cool and collected for two guys whose first series, “Stranger Things,” had become a cultural phenomenon and earned a tantalizing 18 Emmy nominations after the debut of its first season. To clarify, they certainly were not cocky or overconfident, but considering the looming deadline to submit nine episodes of the second season to Netflix they certainly were not as stressed as you or I would probably be.
