Another year, and another Emmy Awards have wrapped up, and pundits are still reflecting on how it all shook out. The big winners of the night — “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Big Little Lies” — shared a common thread, beyond giving dramatic voice to women in leading roles. Both Hulu and HBO‘s series rolled out traditionally, with week by week episodes, instead of following the Netflix and Amazon format of dumping all the episodes at once.

In this era of Peak TV there is no way to make everyone happy. There are always going to be snubs when it comes to the Emmy nominations. There are always going to be deserving nominees who didn’t make the cut. The question this year was whether the Television Academy could continue their trend of rewarding those truly deserving of recognition as opposed to those shows they just love to watch every week. It might be middle of summer, but that doesn’t mean Hollywood isn’t thinking about awards. The 2017 Emmy Award nominations are here, and HBO will be popping the champagne.

The network’s brand new, expensive, and somewhat risky sci-fi series “Westworld” is the toast of the town, with the series leading the field with 22 nominations. The show is tied with “Saturday Night Live” for the most nominations, with the sketch show no doubt aided by a very buzzy election year, which saw Alec Baldwin frequently guest as Donald Trump, and Melissa McCarthy play Sean Spicer.

Let’s be frank, ABC did not do John Ridley or “American Crime” any favors by moving the third season of the anthology series to Sunday nights at 10 PM. It’s hard to get attention for any show during this Peak TV era, but “Crime” was directly up against FX’s “Feud: Bette and Joan” in the same timeslot and HBO’s “Big Little Lies” only an hour beforehand. For a nuanced and not-so flashy drama like “Crime” that pretty much splintered its older prestige audience and it showed in the ratings.
