The big winners of the night — “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Big Little Lies” — shared a common thread, beyond giving dramatic voice to women in leading roles. Both Hulu and HBO‘s series rolled out traditionally, with week by week episodes, instead of following the Netflix and Amazon format of dumping all the episodes at once.

It was your usual evening of A-list celebrities basking in the glow of their accomplishments (full winners list here), however, what everyone seems to be talking about this morning is one huge, sour joke that is leaving a bitter taste in the mouth.

There are always going to be snubs when it comes to the Emmy nominations. There are always going to be deserving nominees who didn’t make the cut. The question this year was whether the Television Academy could continue their trend of rewarding those truly deserving of recognition as opposed to those shows they just love to watch every week. And, some might say that’s one and the same.

The 2017 Emmy Award nominations are here, and HBO will be popping the champagne.

The network’s brand new, expensive, and somewhat risky sci-fi series “Westworld” is the toast of the town, with the series leading the field with 22 nominations. The show is tied with “Saturday Night Live” for the most nominations, with the sketch show no doubt aided by a very buzzy election year, which saw Alec Baldwin frequently guest as Donald Trump, and Melissa McCarthy play Sean Spicer.

It’s time to think about the hundreds of hours of television they have watched and to make some very difficult decisions.

With Peak TV arguably at its height voters will have some tough calls in a ton of categories including Limited Series or TV Movie, Lead Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie, Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Reality-Competition Program and Variety Talk Series, among others.

It’s hard to get attention for any show during this Peak TV era, but “Crime” was directly up against FX’s “Feud: Bette and Joan” in the same timeslot and HBO’s “Big Little Lies” only an hour beforehand. For a nuanced and not-so flashy drama like “Crime” that pretty much splintered its older prestige audience and it showed in the ratings.

If there is one thing you can say about “Feud: Bette and Joan” it’s that Faye Dunaway’s performance in “Mommie Dearest” is no longer the definitive portrayal of Hollywood screen legend Joan Crawford.

It started off slowly, but along the way, “Big Little Lies” became a buzzworthy show that fans still cannot stop talking about and entertainment writers simply won’t stop praising. In fact, you’d think it was such a slow time of year that there was nothing else to write about (ponder that for a moment).

Television Academy members have already received their Emmy screener (FX’s “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia”) and before long Los Angeles will be covered with more for your consideration billboards touting Emmy contenders than summer blockbusters. That’s how big the Emmys have become.

The season traditionally doesn’t begin until May, but planning is well underway at every network and streaming service from NY to LA.
